Why does the main Path of Exile site go down when the game servers are down?

Just curious, but I noticed that during the last patch the main site (pathofexile.com) was down for maintenance during the patch. I was mainly trying to check the patch notes, but I couldn't because the site was down. Is this normally the case? I would imagine that shutting down the game servers for patching wouldn't effect the web servers, or that shutting down the game servers wouldn't effect stuff like the forum or other static pages on the site. Again, I'm just curious about the backend of things.

Note: I just recently started playing PoE on Dec 8th, playing long sessions every day since (It's a really good game), after hearing on Reddit about how a creator of Diablo II was playing this game, which says a lot about both games. So if I'm missing something or said something wrong, feel free to correct me.

Thanks,
gringrant

Everything is hosted on a single server.
The site is pretty closely linked to the game servers. I don't understand the technical details of it, but it's how you can see characters on the website and link items on the forums, and have both update in near-real time. This is the downside.
