I linked my Steam account and everything got deleted

What just happened to me? Why did everything get deleted?

To answer your question: nothing got deleted.
A Steam account can only be linked to one Path of Exile account at a time. If you link it to another Path of Exile account (say, one with no characters), you'll overwrite the original link. Then you'll only have access to characters on the newly-linked account (all zero of them). If you were already playing Path of Exile through Steam then your accounts were already linked.
