doubt regarding chain and number of enemies it can hit

so if there is no chain projectiles hit 1 enemy
if there is 1 chain projctiles hit 2 enemys
if there is 2 chains projctiles hit 3 enemys
if there is 3 chain projctiles hit 4 enemys?

so simplify my question if i have x chains i hit x+1 number of enemies?

or primary projectil consumes a chain?
