dont use steam. problem solved
Can't say I have that problem - or rather, when I have it's on my side, since other downloads will also take long.
Usually, though, I get around 3.5MB/s, which is close to the maximum I could get anyway.

the speed shown in the patcher isn't the download speed but the speed the patcher writes the data into the zipfile (content.ggpk).

some background

differences between the standalone patcher and the steam patcher are, the steam client just downloads chunks of the ressource file which have changed and replaces them in content.ggpk (which is a zipfile basically).

the standalone client patcher downloads the missing files directly and integrates them into the file.

the differences are needed cause steam wants the resource file to be exactly the same as ggg released it for the specific version.

results?
if a zipfile's internal content changes, the difference in the zipfile itself are always bigger than the size of the files that changed.
so steam users have to download more data but the integration is faster cause they don't need to cope with zipping files and the fast indexing file system which content.ggpk contains.

--

the standalone patcher needs to enlarge the file system of content.ggpk first (allocating space...) prior to downloading the files and the packaging needs some processor time (not much though).

as a secondary disadvatage, the file system of the standalone version's resource file fragments if files are deleted and newer bigger files are added. there is a defragmenter program for that which you shouldn't run on the steam ressource file.

ergo: the steam patcher doesn't need to compress data when writing into the resource file, so it's faster.

actually, i checked online, and one of the suggestions i saw was to download and update PoE from steam then copy the gg.pk file into the ggg patcher folder, instead of updating the game using ggg's patcher.

10mbs download speed when downloading other games, doesn't necessarily need to be PoE

should work, it's just the other way around (using the standalone's content.ggpk in steam) which doesn't work.
