3.4 DELVE CHANGES:

TLDR: We throw 1 less trap due to Cluster Trap nerfs but the base damage of Lightning Trap was boosted by 40% and that overcompensates. BUILD GOT STRONGER YEET

3.5 BETRAYAL CHANGES:

Eldritch Battery was buffed! It's now EVEN EASIER to reach infinite mana! Once you pick the keystone and get a good amount of energy shield, it should replenish faster than you can spam traps (even without Tinkerskin to refill).

Q: Why Lightning Trap instead of (insert other skill)?

Short answer: Because it's better and more fun.
Long answer: You can choose literally any skill with traps and it will perform admirably with this guide. If you want to play meta-arc, feel free. Just make sure to remove any projectile related skill nodes/gear bits/jewel stats and make them fit the skill you choose.

6 Link Lightning Trap:
Lightning Trap, Cluster Trap, Trap and Mine Damage, Controlled Destruction, Pierce, Lightning Penetration (or Increased Critical Strikes if you're struggling to crit)

(controlled destruction doesn't mean you can't crit. if you use ele focus you can't shock/shatter. do not.)

For single target situations (like Uber Elder), you can swap in Slower Projectiles instead of Pierce.

4 Link Lightning Spire Trap
Lightning Spire Trap, Elemental Focus, Controlled Destruction, Lightning Penetration

3-5 Link Movement Skill:
Shield Charge, Faster Attacks, Fortify, Culling Strike, Blood Magic

4 Link CWDT:
Cast when Damage Taken, Immortal Call, Enfeeble, Summon Lightning Golem

Keep an eye on the level of your CWDT. I prefer mine to go off when I take about 40% of my maximum life in damage. So if you had 6k life, set it to a level where it requires about 2k damage to proc. Level the other gems accordingly so they cast automatically.

Wrath, Herald of Ice, Herald of Thunder

Support Skills
Bear Trap, Increased Duration, Portal

Alternate Defensive Setups
If you're feeling a bit squishy, swap out Herald of Ice/Herald of Thunder for an Enfeeble, Blasphemy setup. It will drop enemies damage in an area around you for added safety.

LEVELING GUIDE:

Pick Shadow, stab Hillock, get to town, acquire Explosive Trap. Link it to whatever you want. Once you get "The Siren's Cadence" quest you'll get Lightning Trap. Use that until you're level 100!

Suggested Twinked Leveling Items:

Axiom Perpetuum, Crest of Perandus, Tabula Rasa, 2 minus mana cost Elreon Rings (or Incursion mana/mana cost rings), Karui Ward, Wanderlust, Doedre's Tenure, Goldrim, String of Servitude (with 46+ All Resistances), and some Quicksilver Flasks! Just make sure to upgrade your life and mana pots as you can and it should be a breeze.

If you're leveling SSF or in a new league, just look for rares that have decent Life + Resistances. Get attributes as you need, but try to make sure you have fairly high elemental resistances. Ideally, you'd have 75/75/75% ele res by the time you hit Act 7 and maintain that into maps.

How To Make Any Build Budget (including this one):

Skill Tree/Mechanics:

We mostly focus on getting life and trap damage/crit crit multi mods, alongside quite a few jewel sockets to help pad our life and damage.

Keystones:
I take Eldritch Battery in order to unlock our infinite mana combo with Tinkerskin. Since EB allows us to spend Energy Shield instead of mana, we can reserve 100% of our mana and be totally fine. Tinkerskin returns 50 mana per trap triggered by an enemy, so 200-250 mana back per throw. My traps only cost about 60 mana to toss out 4. Easy tossing, no mana potion required!

Phase Acrobatics goes hand in hand with our Born in Shadows ascendancy node. We blind all enemies in an AOE around us, kind of like Blasphemy linked to Enfeeble would. Great defensive buff against attacks AND spells.

We get to blind everything around us! Huge defensive boost, alongside some damage.

Soul of the Brine King
This helps us avoid being stunlocked (that's never fun) and if you get the Divine Vessels done, some Freeze/chill resistance.

Soul of Ryslatha
This allows us to passively gain Life Flask charges if we haven't used one. Great for running Uber Lab or any long boss fights without adds. With Divine Vessel, we get a huge buff to life recovery from flasks while on low life. Great for those random "oh god please don't die" moments.

Rare Gear Stat Priorities:

Make sure you're always resistance capped and have enough stats to equip your gear/gems first.

Weapon: Any rare with a ton of spell/lightning damage with flat elemental damage to spells. You can also use weapons like Heartbreaker, Divinarius, Doryani's Catalyst, or Singularity. Shimmeron sucks cause we can't shield charge soooOOOOo nah.

Helm: Aim for a high Life (80+), high resists, stats as needed helmet. If you're a rich kid, go for a Shaped helmet with additional damage to spells. If you get one with extra links/base crit chance to socketed spells, put your Lightning Spire Trap up there.

Chest: TINKERSKIN. There is no other option. This, combined with Eldritch Battery, allows for infinite spamming of traps because we get ES on trap trigger. So GOOOOOOOOD. Aim for a good life roll.

Gloves: Rares with high life/resists/stats, similar to the helmet. If you want to invest, you can get Shaped gloves with "Skills which throws traps throw up to 1 additional Trap," which translates into about 20% MORE damage. Pretty dumb if you ask me, since it's a global mod and therefore amazing for all of our trap setups.

Boots: Rares with as much life/movespeed/resists, stats as needed. If you want to grab a pair of Elder boots with "Socketed Gems are supported by level 20 Fortify" and free up a link, feel free.

Belt: Get a rare Stygian Vise with good life and resists/stats if you need. Flask Effect Duration is pretty nice if you can get it..

Rings: I went for Shaped rares with Life/Resists/Stats as needed, with extra damage to spells. You'll primarily want to aim for extra Cold to spells, so your traps can shatter enemies and prevent annoying Porcupine deaths.

Amulet: Same as everything else, life/resists/stats as needed. If you'd like extra damage, you can get Spell Damage, Global Crit Chance/Multiplier, and on Shaped amulets you can even get up to 10% Elemental Penetration. Nice.

Endgame Gear:

Try to keep in mind this is endgame potential. You want to aim for similar gear as you push higher and higher, but remember none of this is required to beat all content. If you're res-capped, have the stats you need, and are clearing maps just fine, then you're doing well.

My Preferred Flasks:

If your lightning resist in ( ) in the Character Defense tab is higher than cold/fire, you get extra Penetration! If they are all the same, you get to take less damage from all three and get global Elemental Penetration.


Always need a bleed flask for those pesky stabby mobs. Increased recovery rate helps me be less dead faster.


Physical mitigation for if we ever get hit. Aim for 23% or higher reduced charges used so you get 2 uses out of this flask.


Gotta go fast.


This allows you to roll your critical chance twice, and then chooses the higher between the two. OP OP
Oh and freeze immunity.

You can get bleed/freeze/curse immunity on any 3 of your magic flasks. Just make sure you have all your bases covered somewhere.

Best in Slot Enchantments:

Gloves: Commandment of Winter/Spite/Reflection
I prefer Winter, it's a Cold damage version of Ball Lightning. Crits and freezes anything that touches me. Spite will launch your weapon in 10 directions and leave chilled ground, nice little defensive buff. Reflection will spawn a clone of yourself that runs around and punches things, great distraction but if enemies have Chain can get you killed sometimes.

Helm: Lightning Trap Penetrates 10% Lightning Resistance
Huge damage boost for us. If you're using any other skill, pick the best enchant for that. Arc +2 Chains, for example.

Boots: Damage Penetrates 10% of Enemy Elemental Resistances If You Haven't Killed Recently OR Adds 1-160 Lightning Damage If You Haven't Killed Recently
This is up to you, I go for Pen. Since our traps do all the killing, we don't have to worry about dropping this bonus ever.

THE DEFENSE:

This build has quite a few layers of defense. Up to 20% Life Regen per second from throwing Traps. Fortify for 20% less damage taken from hits, that includes elemental hits. Our 75% elemental resists. A pretty large Area of Effect Blind. Basalt Flask for juicy phy mitigation. Enfeeble when we take damage. If your resists are balanced from Wise Oak, another 10% less damage taken from Fire/Cold/Lightning. Oh and we one shot the screen.

Tinkerskin also heals us for up to 500 health PER TRAP THROW. Instantly. It's nice. Oh and gives us up to 250 Energy Shield per throw. My traps cost 61 mana. INFINITE SUSTAIN!

Word of advice: Get whatever resist/stats you are lacking first. These are just a guideline.

Normal Jewel Stat Priority:
1. Life
2. Critical Multiplier with Lightning Skills/Crit Multi With Spells/Crit Multi With Elemental Skills
3. Global Crit Multi
4. Spell Damage/Spell Damage While Holding a Shield/Projectile Damage/Trap Damage
5. Trap Throwing Speed
6. Lightning Damage
7. Stats/resistances ONLY if you need.

Abyssal Jewel Stat Priority:
1. Life
2. Global Crit Multiplier
3. Added Cold/Lightning to Spells/Added Cold/Lightning to Spells while Holding a Shield
4. Damage Penetrates 2% Elemental Resistances If You Haven't Killed Recently
5. Stats/resists ONLY if you need

WE CAN DO EVERY MAP MOD! No regen is slightly annoying, but since our traps are doing the damage, no leech/reflect are both a non issue. I personally only reroll ridiculously high damage maps and Temporal Chains. No one likes Temp Chains.

Make sure you left click your skills and turn on "Always Attack/Cast without Moving" so you don't stutter step forward to throw traps/Shield Charge/etc. Feels a lot better with it on.

Shimmerons prevents the movement speed/whirling blades. Also if you use a movement skill and it deals damage to a mob shimmeron will smack you badly. If you can get by and not panic flame dash close to mobs the damage is insane. Not sure if it is worth it on a trapper where you kite around quickly with your movementskill.
