Orb of fusing error - "failed to apply item: could not reroll item's socket links"

I have tried to use an orb of fusing on a rare pair of gauntlets. The gauntlets only have one socket and are item level 39 which should allow up to 4 sockets (for a pair of gloves). They are not corrupted. I have tried re-booting the game.

There's your problem. Fusings won't work until you have more than one socket. Use Jeweller's Orbs first until you get the number of sockets you want; then you can use Fusings.
