[3.4] Death's Oath CI Occultist

I'm sorry for the lack of updates to the build guide. I've been working on my degree and university keeps me busy.

As it stands, the build goes two ways (2 curses vs 3) depending on whether you have access to aspect of the spider or not.

You should always look through the latest section as it will contain instructions as to how to traverse the guide. I'll try my best to keep the build updated. You can always ask questions here if you have any.



3.4 UPDATE - READ THIS SECTION FIRST!

The build remains exactly as it was except:

-> We change our gloves from Allelopathy to Fenumus' Weave.

-> We downgrade our Blight from 5L to 4L, dropping Void Manipulation.

Changes for 3.3:

With the loss of Aspect of spider in 3.3, we lose a lot of damage, but gain more defence and ~25% unreserved mana to make use of. We add enfeeble to use the free mana making us tankier.

The build stays the same, except for the following:

-> Ascendancy - Malediction instead of Void Beacon to make use of triple curse (if you can get a +1 curse amulet you can keep Void Beacon, its more dmg than Malediction but less defence. Without +1 curse, Malediction is better imo)

-> Helmet - Heretic's veil instead of Eber's Unification to accommodate triple curses. (Gems to be socketed in helm - Despair, Enfeeble, Temp chains, Discipline. Drop the Blasphemy)

-> Extra curse - Don't need to have a free suffix for Aspect of the Spider. This frees up 25% mana for an extra curse, enfeeble.

(Also the picture above is from 3.2, you'll look worse imo with the proposed changes - Heretics veil and green Enfeeble aura effect. If you care about that stuff anyway)



3.2 guide:

Hi, this my first build guide. If this is well received, I might make more for my other characters.
I did not make this out of scratch, I was looking to try an occultist and Pohx is playing a DO Occultist in Bestiary that I liked and put my own spin on it.

Pros:
Fast map clearer. (Not T1 speed like wanders, autobombers or EK nova)
Tanky. (7k+ ehp with some block, defensive flasks, occulist es recharge, temp chains)
Can farm uber lab comfortably. (Some dodging required, can't facetank everything)
Can do any map mod.
Minimal effort required to play.

Cons:
Only attempt t16+ bosses if you're a masochist. (6L ED makes it easy)
Strength hungry, need to prepare to get 180 str for DO.
Minimal effort required to play.

Introduction

This build focuses on the chest piece Death's Oath:



It has an in-build chaos degen aura that you support with 6 support gems.

[You DON'T need it 6 linked.]

We scale DO dmg by the following limited ways, so it is important to get as much of these as possible:

% increased chaos damage
% increased damage over time
% increased effect of non-curse auras
% increased area damage
% increased damage

And the aspect of the spider aura from Fenumus:



We use Blight along with the Blight threshold jewel Spreading Rot to augment our damage.



We get reservation, area and aura nodes on the tree to shove in 4-5 auras and buff Death's Aura dmg.

Can do any map mod. Swap in a mana flask for no regen ones.

The build farms yellow maps just by walking, mobs die while you pick up currency.
Upper reds might require blight casts depending on how the mods roll.

This is not a Guardian/Shaper/U-Atziri/Red Elder farmer (Elder is particular is annoying since the Null portals have chaos res, making the add phase difficult to complete fast).

I don't suggest doing them with this build in its regular form, however I have added an alternative ED single target setup that just takes 3 gem swaps.

I suggest levelling with Essence Drain and Contagion, since they benefit from all the dmg over time nodes we already take.

ED Links -> ED > Efficacy > Swift Affliction > Controlled Destruction (Void manip. and Empower are your 5th and 6th links should you choose to get them)

Cont Links -> Cont > Inc Aoe > Arcane Surge > Faster Casting.

You should use DO only after you change to CI.

Don't rush the change to CI, you need decent ES gear to have good ehp once you do switch. You can pretty much farm any content with ED/cont, so stick to it, till you get DO with the right colors and decent ES gear to get around 5k ES. You can import your char into PoB and check how much ehp you'd get after the switch.

You will need to respec 20 points, less if you choose to not get as many life nodes.

Level 22 in-built Blight, pretty great. Quality only gives you area, its not required since profane bloom takes care of packs.

BIS - Commandment of Light or +1 gems corruption.

Budget option: Anything with ES and res. Get a blight gem.


Boots:

Lot of ES, 30% MS and dex, which we really need.

BIS - Regenerate 2% of Life and Mana per second if you were Hit Recently.

Budget option: Anything with ES, res, dex, str.


Amulet:

No mana resv for Despair. Damage over time. Maddening Presence, giving a nice defensive boost.

Look for max damage over time roll.

Budget option: Anything with ES, res, stats. Look for free prefix to craft % max es.


Belt:

Crystal belt is the best base. Alternatively, you may use a darkness enthroned with two abyss jewels with 35+ flat es and % dmg if killed recently mods for a decent chunk of dmg and similar ehp has a rare belt. However a rare belt allows you to get str and res since you have limited slots to get them, specially if you're running Impresence.


Rings:

As much ES, res and strength as you can get. DO needs 180.

Look for free prefixes to craft faster start of ES recharge from Leo.


Aspect of the Spider:

Can be beast craft as a suffix on any rare gear if you have Fenumus.

Reserves 25% mana (by default) for an aoe debuff that slows enemy movement speed by 30% and hinders them every second.

Also applies 1 spider web per second for 6 seconds which increased dmg taken by 5% (stacks 3 times).

15% more multiplier from a suffix. Cool.

Swap in Rumi's for tough bosses instead of quicksilver.

Its important to get chaos dmg and over time rolls, since we have very little ways to scale DO aura dmg. Ats for shield charge speed, stats and res are good as remaining rolls.


You want x2 of these. Look for max % chaos dmg roll. Allocate them wherever as long as you have 40 int in the radius (the int does not have to be allocated).


If you have one. Remember to use clarity with it if you do.

Arcane surge is required to add duration tag to Death's aura, otherwise less duration and swift affliction do not apply to it. It enables our 7L.

Clarity is optional here, only being worth it if you have a watcher's eye with the clarity bonus es mod.

I'm making a character to try this build, thanks for the guide. It's just that I've never really leveled a witch since many years ago when I made my very first character with a Flame Totem. I'm not sure what spells would be most efficient to level with untill you can use all the uniques? Any advice on a leveling spell would be appreciated. :)

Level with Essence Drain and Contagion, you can use that setup till you find and color your DO, switch to CI and get the strength to equip it, which should be around level 65+.

ED links are in the potential upgrades section (skip empower and void manip as the last 2 links).

Contagion -> Cont > Inc aoe > Arcane surge > faster casting.

I also suggest staying away from profane bloom for as long as you're using ED cont as it will mess up your ability to chain cont to clear entire screens. Get it as soon as you switch to DO.

This build is a near point per point perfect amalgamation between FlasherCatcher's Death's Oath build and DemonicSlayer2015's, each of which were added to the listing due to being significantly different. With the exception of choosing different jewel sockets to reach for and emphasizing curse effectiveness, there really is little difference.

I think I've been fiddling around with my tree lately (might have forgotten to update it.)

personally it seems unique enough to me. Just a quick glance it has 113% more (increased damage than my build, void beacon and eber's really seems to ramp up the damage though)

Tried putting an eber's on my pob character with despair enchant and end up breaking the despair gem an hour later and I still can't get it figured out. Overall the damage is definately higher, but it does lack the defensive power of a third curse and malediction. (if malediction was still just a boring +1 curse I would have gone void beacon again.

Anyways, healthy death's oath competition will be the death of me =D
