Elemental Overload VS Crit

What is the consensus on when you should use EO and when crit becomes superior?

What is the minimum crit chance to maintain uptime with EO?

It depends on the build (weapon type and skill selection). For example, you would really want to go crit if you had a claw or dagger but maybe you want EO for a weapon with less base crit.

Crit generally has a higher dps ceiling than EO generally.

Use orb of storms and you will have EO up almost always even with basic crit chance. EO is for those folks who do not invest in crits at all.

when you invest mainly in (crit strike chance / power strike on crit) and use that crit flask, (which can roll twice and pick the best).

I'll name a few important factors

- Which side of the tree you are on (left is easier for EO, right is easier for crit)
- base crit chance of your weapon/spell (for example non-crit for oni-goroshi would be a weird choice, likewise for crit incinerate)
- EO is usually more tanky and easier to fit with good regen and lots of HP
- Crit can usually get more dps but less defences/HP, but can have as good survivability due to superior leech (depends on the build ofc)
- Crit gear tends to usually be more expensive and harder to balance your resists while also having good life rolls

you take eo if you are non-crit build and you can get it for not too many points

If you are making a crit build in the first case, always focus on crit.

If you are making non-crit elemental build, pick up elemental overload if you are near it already and don't need to pay too much to travel to it (or can travel to it picking up other things that are of high value to your build)

Triggering EO is done by combining one or more of three approaches:

1. Base crit on main attack/spell - if it is something with many attacks/spells per second this may provide enough EO coverage, but mostly people don't rely on this

2. CWDT(1)-Increased Critical Strikes(20)-Ice Spear(11)-(Fireball(8) if 4L) is quite good for tanking builds and others that frequently take damage as it is full automatic

3. Orb of Storms(20)-Increased Critical Strikes(20)-(whatever for 3L and 4L, increased AOE if you want more coverage) is the best way to generate crits on demand, but requires manual casting of Orb of Storms

These are so good at it that investing any skill points in crit strike nodes in an EO build is a waste unless the node also provides something else that is attractive.

Okay. Folks, you're overthinking it.

EO is a standing 40% More if you've crit in the last eight seconds. So treat it as 100% (elemental) crit chance, with 1.4% (40 More) multiplier, in any situation where it matters.

If you want to know if EO is a DPS up or a DPS down for your build? Take your crit multiplier, then multiply it by your crit chance (percentage). Is the result higher than 1.4? Then normal crit is better for the build. Is the result lower than 1.4? EO is better.

Elsewise? It's the usual critbuild questions. Is your prospective build at least able to hit 50% normal/standing crit chance, without the stupid flask? Can you get at least 300 multi? That nets you 0.5 * 3, which ends at 1.5 effective multiplier - just barely beating Elemental Overload for DPS.

Everyone has different thresholds of 'viable crit build', but beating EO's 1.4 effective multiplier is sort of a requirement. If you don't have enough crit chance/multi that the effective multiplier math is higher than 1.4, you're critbuilding wrong. Ideally you should at least double it for crit to be worth the investment, I'd think. Some folks figure you're critbuilding wrong if your effective crit multiplier isn't up around 4 or 5.
It's pretty simple. If your build is crit, don't take EO. If your build is not crit, take EO.

also if you are melee you can use cwdt+gmp+ice spear to have eo up most of the time.
