Elemental Overload passive skill question

In path of building the tool tip for taking Elemental Overload (40% more elemental damage if you've crit in the past 8 seconds), shows that taking this increases my dps. However, if I also take a Spell Crit Strike Chance node, which increases critical strike chance by 20% path of building shows a decrease in dps. Is this just a bug, or is there something I'm missing about how EO works?

Also, side question, what does it mean in EO "No Critical Strike Multiplyer"? I understand what crit strike multiplyer means but what is the relevance for the EO node?

If you have Elemental Overload, changing your critical strike chance should not affect your paper DPS, neither increase nor decrease it. You are using something else that does that; without seeing your build it is impossible to see what. Mind posting a pastebin link?

It simply means that your critical strikes won't deal any extra damage. By default a critical strike deals 150% of the damage of a normal hit, this can be increased by Increased Critical Strike Multiplier mods. With Elemental Overload, critical hits always deal the same amount of damage as a normal hit would (regardless of any crit multiplier mods you have).

In other words, the only difference between a crit and a non-crit is the triggering of the EO buff, and a 100% chance to inflict elemental ailments. Crits won't deal more damage than non-crits.

No, what I am saying is in POB with the skills I currently have, which includes EO, if I mouse over the crit chance node that I am considering taking the tooltip shows a decrease in dps, so it must be a bug, either that or I am doing something weird, in any case you have answered my question. Having taken EO it is a good idea to increase crit strike chance, which seemed obvious to me, I was just stumped by POB.

Ok, thanks for that explanation, but just to be perfectly clear, with EO whenever I crit, for 8 seconds after that my elemental damage increases but the crit that triggered that, and any and all crits that occur do not actually crit, meaning multiply damage?

Which leaves me wondering if this is such a good node to take. For it to work well you need higher crit chance, but putting effort into increased crit takes away the crit multiplyer. I guess the %40 more damage more than makes up for it?
It's for when you have a rather unreliable crit chance, actually. If you regularly crit, increasing crit multiplier is probably better.

Most people hit stuff so fast that even a 5% crit chance is good enough to get almost constant Elemental Overload.

Which node are you considering? Hovering over any crit nodes reasonably close to your tree shows no change in DPS for me (as expected).

They do crit (for the purpose of things like Cast on Crit), but they will not do any extra damage.

By default, a crit is 50% "more" damage for the hit that crits. (Which you can potentially increase by added crit multipier.) EO gives you 40% "more" damage for all damage 8 seconds after you crit. In other words, if you crit at least once every 8 seconds (which is not difficult at all even with minimal or no investment in crit chance), you will permanently deal 40% more damage with all sources.

It is very worth taking for any elemental build that does not want to invest many skill points and gear stats into critical hits. Additionally, EO works with all damage sources - including Damage over Time, which cannot crit! So with a skill like Righteous Fire or Scorching Ray, you can get the 40% more damage, while the loss of critical multiplier means nothing to you.
The decrease in DPS is probably a bug. I've seen a lot of things in Path of Building that don't work right, such as it won't take into account totems, or poison stacks.

The more that I think about it, and after your explanation, EO is a very good option for me, even without having dot skills. Right now in the POE stats it shows I have only a 6% or 7% crit chance between Freezing Pulse and Arctic Breath my two main spells. To get a crit every 8 seconds like you suggest I would need more crit, like maybe around 15% I'm guessing. The interesting thing it that if I had much more crit than that it would be wasted. Maybe that is what BOF was somehow trying to calculate, (BTW-when I logged in for a new session the tooltip dit not show any damage change, so not sure what that was about). But it makes sense to me now that if you have EO after a certain amount of crit chance it would be wasted and maybe that is another (although a stretch) way of saying your dps would decreas.

Anyway, thanks for the help. I'm going to try and up my crit chance to about 15% and I think that would pretty much ensure I'm critting every 8 seconds.
