"Crafting" Uniques

Hi,

I'm a newbie in Path of Exile. Therefore I'm not used with all mechanics. So here's my question:

Is it easier/cheaper to buy a unique with 1 or 2 sockets and craft it yourself with jeweller's, chromatics and so on to get a 6L with the colours I'm looking for than to buy a perfect one on poe.trade?

Since I'm a beginner, "perfect" uniques are absolutely unaffordable for me. I talk about Queen of the Forest in particular.

Luck based a lot. You can get guaranteed 6L from vorici for 1500 fusings, average to link yourself is around 1000 fusings, but you might get it in 1 fusing or 5000. Most of the time it's cheaper to buy already linked item. Coloring you want to do yourself (it is harder to get off colors tho, so keep that in mind. Like if you have pure armor chest with 180 str requirement it will be very hard to get blue or green sockets on it. https://siveran.github.io/calc.html - can get estimate here on how many chroms you will need to get specific colors). Also 6L is not mandatory at all for 95% of builds, so don't feel forced to get it. 5L is not that hard to get yourself and is waay cheaper to buy

It's basically always cheaper (on average) to buy an item pre-5/6Led than to link it yourself. Buying good rolls vs spamming divine orbs is less certain, but buying is usually cheaper.

Unless you get super lucky, you won't be seeing more than four linked sockets from crafting. Five will happen occasionally. Assuming that the item has at least a ilvl of 50 (if you hold Alt and hover over the item, you'll see "item level: xx"), there's a 0.33% chance of rolling six sockets with a Jeweler's Orb. Or, you can spend 350 orbs at Vorici's crafting bench (called an Artisan's Bench) in your hideout for 6 sockets.

For Orbs of Fusing, the odds of obtaining 6 linked sockets are something like 1/1000 or 1/1500, or you can spend 1500 Orbs at the same bench for the same effect.

Then you have to spend Chromatic Orbs to get the right colors.

Essentially, it's easier to buy the item off of the trade site.

It's cheaper in terms of time, but if you can't afford it, it's a wash.

Thank you, guys. That helped me a lot. I've never imagined it'd be so hard to craft a 6L myself. So I will farm exalted once I get in those spheres. As a beginner I've never seen one before but maybe it's not that rare what I think of by reading forum threads.

Or maybe I will just get a nice 5L and see how that fits.

The good thing about six link uniques that are in high demand is that once you buy it, you can turn right around and sell it once your done. So in a way, buying a six link unique chest is completely FREE. tee hee hee

Good luck with your farming! You might find one soon, you might not find one for a long time. Exalted Orbs have a very low drop rate, and it is so satisfying when you finally see one!
