How does alternate skill effect MTX work?

I apologize if this is clearly outlined somewhere, but I'm not finding it through any cursory searches in google or on the forums.

I understand how all of the other MTX systems work, and they are very convenient. But all my alternate skill MTX icons in the MTX tab just say IN USE. And they are not active on this character. How do I switch them over to the current char?

Note: They don't seem to be on the skills of the char I last played using them?

GGG has said that it's not currently possible to take skill gem MTX from another character, but that this is functionality they plan on adding sometime in the future when they get the chance.

Here's what I've been doing;

• Log in on a character using the MTX.
• Open that character's inventory.
• Switch to the Cosmetics tab.
• Click on the relevant skill gem.
• Set the MTX it is using to None (red x icon).
• The skill gem MTX should no longer be in use.
