(2.6) Saboteur EK Nova Cluster Trapper (aka the Pipebomber) {WIP}

PATCH 2.6 LEGACY LEAGUE ETHEREAL KNIVES NOVA CLUSTER TRAPPER (still a work in progress, gameplay footage coming soon)

Gameplay Footage:
Spoiler
T12 Shaped Mud Geyser with triple league stones:

Pros:
Spoiler
- great for clearing trash/general mapping
- whole screen (and even further) damage, completely untouched by patch 2.6 aoe nerfs
- Actively do damage on the go; set your traps and keep moving and let the mobs damage themselves on your traps
- CI for more effective life pool
- Unleash your inner terroist without worries about the FBI showing up to your front door

Cons:
Spoiler
- Single target kind of lacking (once I get at least a 5l chest piece going, I'll add bladefall traps for single target damage to counter this)
- Eats up mana quickly
- Trap cooldown can be annoying; not something you can constantly spam
- Traps can't leech, so you're stuck taking Zealot's Oath/regen to keep your health up
- Very unique dependent, not recommended as a starter build as you'll need to farm up a fair bit of currency to get it going depending on what prices are like at the time you make the build (still early in legacy, so everything is still insanely priced at the moment)

Build initial concept and playstyle:
Spoiler
I wanna first give a shoutout to my buddy Pohx (yeah THE pohx, the guy that is the know it all when it comes to trap builds) for initially giving me the idea for this. I was hanging out on his twitch stream when GGG first announced the ring of blades threshold jewel, which allows EK to fire in a nova. His first thought was, "why not put this in a cluster trap?" Upon hearing that, I got super excited and completely made this build from the ground up. It's gone through several iterations as I've tried out various uniques and items to try and get it going. Originally I planned to just scale as much spell and physical damage as possible, then went with the idea of scaling poison. Currently I'm somewhere in the middle with the build until I can get some better gear going.

The way you play this build is that, first off, you have to realize that this is not a build you face tank things with, and this is also not a build that you spam a bunch. This is a build where you throw down a trap, then move. You kite and try to force mobs to walk onto your traps. So it's a build where you set, kite, kill stuff. Repeat until everything is dead. One massive downside to this is that if your damage is really lacking, you'll be going through mana very fast, even with a mana flask on hand. It's important to get some kind of single target damage on hand that is separate because even with this skill shotgunning thanks to the cluster traps and applying a lot of stacks of poison, it still doesn't quite have the oomph that bladefall traps do. So your single target is gonna be hit or miss depending on the boss you're fighting. One massive advantage that trap builds have is that you can put your traps down before opening a strongbox/fighting a boss like Izaro to prepare for the slaughter beforehand.

Level 90 passive tree (the complete one, when you get all the juicy uniques that benefit the build)

Current Passive Tree on the build at level 84 (missing a number of build enhancing uniques thanks to prices being through the roof at the moment):

Also, while I don't have them yet, I would recommend having voidwalker boots, and an energy from within jewel to socket by the melding cluster on the right side of the tree. Both are at 100c at the time of my writing this guide, so they're a little bit out of reach for me at the moment. Voidwalker would allow me to drop all the pierce passives and drop pierce from my gem link, to be replaced with poison. Putting poison in my links would allow me to drop the coated shrapnel jewels for more cheap construction jewels or some nice rare jewels. Cheap construction allows you to have more traps out on the ground at one time, at the cost of less trap duration, which would be a form of dps boost because more traps = more projectiles hitting things = more stacks of poison being applied = more thing dying. With a lot of uniques being used, it does put a strain on getting resistance capped in merciless, so keep that in mind. I finally settled on using the Quill Rain as weapon of choice despite it not scaling spell or trap damage because of one major perk that it gives the build; that INSANE amount of projectile speed with makes the EK novas as massive as they currently are. Mine is pretty low rolled, but I'm spamming divine orbs on it to get the number higher. Quill rain can give you up to 100% increased projectile speed, which, when coupled from sniper on the passive tree and the faster projectiles gem, just obliterates everything up to 1 and 1/2 screens away. Only thing that would stop it is environmental objects, such as pillars, which obstruct EK's projectiles. And with 100% pierce chance, EK's projectiles just blow holes right through enemies and keep right on going. Open maps like Arid Lake are preferred for this build because of how fast you can clear through it due to how many enemies you can hit and poison with a single cast of cluster trap. And again, each one of those projectiles that hits applies a stack of poison.

Next I went with Soul Strike because my initial build idea was to have a dagger and ES shield to get my effective life pool up and scale spell damage. However, it became apparent to me that trying to color a Vaal Regalia chestpiece to have 5 green and 1 blue socket was something of a nightmare. Once I tried out the Quill Rain and enjoyed it and settled on using a bow for the build to handle the requirements (6s it in 10 jeweler's and 6l it in 80 something fuses might have helped sway my decision as well lol) I decided to go with Soul Strike to try and make up for some of that ES loss. I would say that a drillneck would be a good choice if you're not concerned about ES and want more damage. However, I find that the near instant ES recharge coupled with my vaal discipline gem did a lot for keeping me alive through tough fights. And getting a legacy soul strike with the 150% faster start of ES recharge would be a godsend for improving the defense of the build further.

Leveling advice:
Spoiler
Traps are pretty hard to level with in general, so I would recommend leveling as blade vortex with a couple lifesprigs, a pair of wanderlust boots, and a goldrim helm until at least after getting your Cruel ascendancy points. Chain Reaction is so build enabling (especially with that +40% trap recovery cooldown) that trying to level without it is pretty pointless. That said, if you absolutely HAVE to level as a trapper, then I'd say hold off at least until you rush for Clever Construction on the big traps node to the right of shadow start. This will keep your traps from being destroyed by enemies for up to five seconds. The cool thing here is that the ring of blades jewel doesn't have a level requirement, so leveling as a nova EK caster is also a good option and you'll be taking a jewel node very early on while trying to rush for clever construction anyways. I'd still recommend leveling as blade vortex for simplicity's sake though. If you go the self-cast EK-nova route, I'd recommend buying a Karui Ward amulet as it will give you a pretty good amount of strength early on, plus gives you stuff like movement speed, projectile speed, and projectile damage buffs.

This build has a lot of potential and as I now am starting to take it into red maps, my need for an Energy From Within and Voidwalker boots becomes more apparent. As you can see on the two trees, I'm still stuck investing a LOT of points into having to take fatal toxins and the pierce nodes to get my chance to poison near 100% and my pierce chance to 100%. I will continue to update this guide as I progress and I also plan to add some sick gameplay footage as well when time permits. Feel free to give me any thoughts/feedback/comments/concerns/questions down in the comments section of this guide and I will get back to you ASAP.

Nice build sir!

I noticed a couple things, I think for these trap builds the most important is to double dip poison. So i would really suggest 4x coated shrapnel as mandatory instead of a poison jewel, so you can run trap and mine damage. And when you scale poison the potency of will cluster is an insane dps multiplier. Have you tried putting your build into path of building? I think the chaos nodes atrophy are better than the phys ones, for poison/decay scaling at least. Also take void barrier instead of melding unless you have energy from within (expensive this league).

edit: i also think z/o is unnecessary especially if you go the decay bow version with legacy soulstrike.

im curious to see how far you can push this keep it up!

Hello. I am also greatly intrigued with this build and want to squeeze the full potential which I think it does have. I am really liking what thevdende suggested and want to add to that. One question is what are the curses you are doing? I would be thinking Temp Chains and Enfeeble (for defense) or Vulnerability (for offense) would be an amazing curse to use especially if the focus is more on poison. Also poison will greatly help with your single target damage. Also wondering if Corruption node would be good also and instead of of trap and mine damage would added chaos be better? So much theory crafting needed to be done but I'm liking it

Yeah, I managed to get some GG boots while doing a rota the other day and sold them today for 10ex. That money was a real boost for improving this build. As you can see on my profile (it should be set for public viewing, if not I'll fix it) I managed to get a much better belt as well as a foil soul strike. I also decided to drop the coated shrapnel jewels because I really needed more ES to survive the big hits. Maybe if I can level this up enough to take some of the ES nodes just to the right of the curse nodes in the witch area, I can drop these rare jewels and give the coated shrapnel jewels another shot.

That said, I've had some good times with the build today. I managed to do my own uber lab with the build, and also took down Abaxoth solo. Sadly, although I hit the record button with GeForce shadowplay for the Abaxoth kill, it did not actually record the fight. Still very salty about that because I really wanted that footage. It wasn't deathless (map had TC, so running away/kiting was very difficult), but it was way easier than I thought it would be.

So I'll just try to spawn him again and try to get another shot at recording it. I also plan to record an uber lab run since the layout isn't too cancerous today. By getting my Uber lab points, my defensiveness and deeps have both gone up thanks to born in the shadows. I get 30%damage increase and with blinding assault, every time I take a hit, enemies are blinded. So allowing myself to take a small hit boosts my damage. Also, with born in the shadows, I take 6% less damage from blinded enemies. Between the less damage taken, and reduced accuracy that blind causes, it makes the build tankier.

As for curses, I'm running a witchfire brew, which gives a level 21 vuln blasphemy as well as a nice boost to DoT. The plan is to work my way up to whispers of doom for a second curse and go with a TC blasphemy. I managed to get a +30% TC curse effectiveness enchantment on that uber lab run, so that's a huge boost for both my offense and defense capabilities if I can work a +1 curse in somewhere.

Your profile is public but I cant view your characters. Would love it if you could enable that.
Okay, it should be fixed now. Btw, if anyone was curious as to what the stats were on those boots I sold for 10 exalts, here it is: http://imgur.com/AMw1M1f

How about Winds of change for more projectile speed and damage?

It's not a bad idea, but too many uniques and not enough rares to cover resists is a bad thing. It would mean having to drop something else to make up for the resists. Dropping eye of chayula is kind of bad for a CI char because stuns will drive you insane/kill you a lot in higher level maps.

Also, the life roll on winds of change isn't very efficient for a CI build.
Hi agian, I had a look at your characters tree. I would highly suggest dropping zealots oath, you are spending 6 points for some ES regen, while you are running a legacy soulstrike! I also notice you are using poison gem, so in that case I would suggest dropping coated shrapnel from your build tree, and replacing it with a trap/es jewel or perhaps hair trigger (hair trigger increases the radius of trap trigger making chain reaction go off more consistantly). If you do drop z/o take the potency of will cluster instead, it is the largest increase in dps for any poison build!

P.S. I like the quill rain choice, the aoe must be crazy!

Awesome build :) I was a bit septic at first in doing it but it looked fun! I ran with a quill rain for a while and yes,it is nice for the AoE coverage but...It's was just not doing it for me in high maps.

I've gotten the EK projectile speed helm enhancement and I went with a Delirium bow. Perfect bow would be to craft it with Delirium and to already have +1 Gems & Projectile speed and then master craft DoT from Leo. But I am poor.

I've also dropped ZO since i find it really useless and I added spell totem+wither to help with the single target,as well as CWDT with Vortex for extra slow.

The build is amazing! In both clear and not broken at all in single target.

Here's my current gear:
