QFT

be safe where you browse, and stop using your birthday as your password lol

Mine is currently between 8-13 characters long, alpha/numeric/special sign, and in a foreign (to me) language

The challenge and its prizes have been issued hackers. Get to work.
I wouldn't call someone with 10 years in the IT world an expert.

no you need to do something about it. get a stronger password, scan your system for malware, stop browsing pr0n sites.
Not PoE got hacked, YOU got "hacked". I'm now playing online games for nearly a decade and never ever was an account of mine compromised. People tend to claim that it's not their fault while in fact it was. But would you admit that you caught a virus while looking for some nasty things on the interwebz that lead to your account beeing compromised? I wouldn't.

edit: It's the same thing with bots and hacks. Even in counterstrike people cheat, get banned and claim they got hacked. Or in Diablo 3 and LootAlert. No one ever got banned for LootAlert. All of those got banned for botting.

I don't know why you get off on shitting on people already feeling like shit, oh wait I do. First time in my 16 years of gaming that my account got hacked, not saying it's GGG's fault though just that it can happen to most people.

wrong. my neighbour was hacked (way poorer than me) and i was the last person who was logged on his computer before hack (with my acc). he never logged into his acc from another computer. so obviously ggg servers got hacked.

You fucking dumb? Not everything is a fault of the user. That many reports at the same time suggests one single thing; PoE got hacked.

A lot of people I know, that never uses same password twice, never saves them anywhere on their PC, and avoids malicious files/sites, while running stuff like Defense+ combined with a good firewall and anti-malware also got hacked.

99% of the time, it is the user's fault for not taking the necessary steps to protect their personal information.

1) Make sure you always have your firewall running and know what programs are running in the background and what actually sends information.
2) Always update Adobe-based software and Java. Secunia PSI is a wonderful piece of software that will automatically update all those programs for you. Keep Windows up to date always. (If you are using a Pirated Version of Windows, haha.)
3) Make sure you have an anti-virus always active while you are downloading files. If you are unclear about a file google it and clarify if it a malicious application. (Microsft Security Essentials is free and rather reasonable)
4) If your e-mail password is unicorn1111 you really need to change it to something like correcthorsebatterystaple (that is not my password, don't even try).
5) Imho gmail is one of the safest e-mails to have due to the fact they have an authenticator to use. Make use of it to secure your e-mail.
6) Start using a password safe. Keep all your passwords there and you will only need to remember one password.
7) If you are in doubt, do not download software. If you really want to download it, use Sandboxie in a dummy VirtualBox to test that software and see if it connects to the internet (or tries to).

Let's not forget. Going on a website that got exploited by a zero-day will get anyone. Running NoScript & Adblock plus on your browser ensures your security.

And as much as I would not like to point this out.

PLAYERS WILL NEVER ADMIT THEY DID SOMETHING BAD BEFORE THEY GOT BANNED. EVERYONE IS INNOCENT.
the people claiming GGG got hacked have no idea how db security works. but hey, i dont expect them to. the only way someone can gain access to the DB that stores username/password info ( wich is more than likely hashed, salted, and perhaps even encrypted ) is to fully breach their network perimitter. This is because any DB admin worth his salt will never allow the DB server to talk to anything but the production servers that need access to it. so, if we can assume there was a full scale breach of GGG security, then it would be safe to assume the hackers have access to the ENTIRE GGG network. This would mean they have access to EVERY username/password combo. Now, i dont know if you have ever worked with cryptography software, but you can unencrypt data, it just takes time and compute power. So it would be logical to assume that if they gained access to all the users account info, that ALL the accounts would be getting hacked. As you can see it is only a select few people who are getting hacked. This screams of people downloading an infected hack or that another community site has been compromised ( hosted website leave security up to the customer, and odds are someone using a canned CSM package doesnt know anything about propper DB/Network security ). Thats just my 2 cents. I have worked in IT for 10+ years, but do not claim to be an expert by any means. and to the people who will counter this argument by arguing otherwise are probably lying or ommitting crucial info from their story.

Stop buying currency off of third party sites with the same info you login to PoE with.

Derp, the secrets out.

As soon as currency selling sites pop up kids start getting "hacked". No coincidence, happens in every RPG online type game.
