Is snapshotting possible for summoners?

A (rather experienced) player in the forums recently suggested using Skullhead and a few other summoner-specific uniques to raise my creatures, and then switching back to my regular gear to play.

Is this actually a thing? I thought this was something that was considered an exploit and fixed long ago, but am I wrong?

General Balance Changes

• All cases of "snapshotting" have been fixed. If you change your items or support gems, then any persistent effects of skills (for example, minions or auras) will update to reflect the changes. You no longer gain benefit from items or gems that are not currently equipped.
