.. but what is DIFFERENCE between standard and league?

is it like diablo 3 where there is SEASON and normal?

i know there are few unique items that are specific to the leagues ...

but is there also some item options/stats/skill differences between those two?

Leagues have special uniques, and also special mechanics. In Prophecy, there will be prophecies (mini-quests) you can complete. Also, leagues have a new economy, which some people like - standard has lots of old stuff.

Otherwise they are the same.

Largely yes. In Path of Exile the temporary leagues also have some special mechanics, but the core game stays the same.
