Vigilant Strike/Fortify question..

Forgive me if this has been asked before but I LITERALLY can't find this information anywhere..

If you were to kill a mob with Vigilant Strike and it explodes from Volatile Iceblood for example.
Since Vigilant Strike gives you fortify, which occurs first? Is it the damage from Iceblood or is it the mitigation from Fort?
