Unique items and gem slots

Hi :)
For Example I bought unique item with 1-3 gem slots, Can I go to Artisan's Bench(Vorci) and add 4 linked for 5 orb of fusing ? | |

The fact that it's a unique item is the least useful bit of information here.
If the item is a one-handed weapon, no. Those can never have more than 3 sockets. If the item is something else, then you need to get at least 4 sockets on it using jeweler's orbs, first. You can't 4-link an item that doesn't have 4 sockets. |
