Search/Highlight Passive Skill Tree Function

I imagine this has been suggested already as the average PoE playerbase is rather intellectual, but if not then it will be a good suggestion. If it has been suggested, just ignore it I guess.

The title says it all really. Is there any way to implement an easy "search and highlight" utility to the passive skill tree screen? By simply typing in say, "frenzy charge" it would highlight on the passive skill tree in yellow or some color all of the frenzy charges (or any passive) on the tree.

I think that this simple implementation could help with ease of use/discovery and thus provide more unique and diverse builds.

Tell me your thoughts on the matter.

I think i've read something about this somewhere, but i dont know the response from GGG.

Anyway this is definitly something that would be usefull.

But the filter should be a dropdown box, so the user can select the wanted effect.
it started with a request to have an external talentcalculator for the non-betas.
Had to disagree and say i want this to be a simple integrated talentcalulator,
then some1 added filters to it and made it complex.
Now its hovering around on whats the best way to do this.

by simply typing "frenchy charges" in, your computer will explode.
Dropdownmenue´s arent that good too, too many variables to select from.

How about 3 chechbox for either STR DEX or INT.
followed by other chechboxes for Offensive Deffensive and Spezial.
and then a Dropdown-menue ?

I've been thinking about it, and what if:

1)
- Holding down SHIFT ( or some other key) while selecting a passive skill with the mouse, would add the properties of the passiveskill to a list in the upper left corner with the appropriate icon.

- All Passives that has one or more properties found in the list would be highlighted.

- If a passive skill has several properties fx.: "4% Increases Axe Damage & 6% Attack speed", then both properties would be added to the propertylist as individual items, with each its own icon.

2)
Clicking on one property would remove it from the list, and the highlighting.

Example:
Player SHIFT click a passive with: "4% Increases Axe Damage & 6% Attack speed ".
The following properties is added to the list:
- Increases Axe Damage
- Attack speed

All Passives that has one or more properties found in the list would be highlighted.

Those are some of the thoughts I was having in regards to how the system would work and the idea of every one of the possible passives being highlighted would be crazy. What I was sort of thinking of what I would want to see if at all possible would be that (1.) only a select amount would be highlighted around the general area however that would be difficult to work out and there are too many variables that play into that.

I think the easiest way would be to do something like the last poster suggested as I think a dropdown box would have far too many options and would require you to possibly scroll forever.

I was trying to think of (2.) a very specific way to do it without highlighting everything or even highlighting unnecessary ones such as ones clear on the other side of the map or those you would never be able to get to in the lifetime of your character.

(3.) What I think might be the easiest way would be to give passives more colors than they do now and provide a small key or something showing what everything is or at least general attributes such as a charge or single handed damage. That way, much like the small images, you would be able to find them more easily.

But even then I am sure there are easier ways ; )

@Apparation

I think that we need to keep in mind that they want the player to choose a path through all the passives.

A path ofc. requires one more more destination. ( having multiple destinations along the path, or branching out)

To that end, the destination(s) would be some desired skillgroup(s).

Highlighting seems to me, to be the most effective way of ensuring that the player knows where the desired skillgroups are located relatively to the current "path" he is on.

If you agree on this, then the question is: what is the most userfriendly way to highlight one or more passive skills.

Another suggestion ( without a filter building up several properties. )

Holding down a key, fx. SHIFT, while mousehovering a certain passive, all similar passives would become highligted.

If a passive has several properties then all passives with one or more of those properties would become highlighted.

I definitely agree and can see more builds, unique and not, being produced as a result. I like the idea you put forth quite a lot and can see that implemented fairly easily and wouldn't have much strain on things.

Thank you!, well it's pretty simple, and intuitive, ( when intuitive is the definition of something that theuser have tried before ;-) ).

Either way I definitely see a need for this as this is one of the only areas of the game that I have a mild issue with... very very mild.

I was just thinking the same thing. Though I think the best solution would be to literally allow us to highlight a specific skill on the tree rather than having any search function.
Often enough while playing I level and I'll take a few moments to search through the skill tree to see where I am at and where I want to go. I'll find something I like and put my point in the direction I want to go and continue on playing only to forget later where I intended to go along the skill tree. Or even where that awesome skill 20 - 30 points down was.
I think a simple {Shift, Right-Click} and having the skill literally highlight in white or red or yellow so that the next time I have a skill point to spend I will see almost immediately where I intended to go and what I wanted when I got there.
