Why it is bad to change reduced mana.
This is kind of a three part series that I split up for readability. Here are the other parts:
http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1286685 http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1286687 I am NOT talking about the new leagues. I am totally fine with not having red mana in the new leagues. I can make builds without it, characters will be balanced around it, and nobody is gonna use the new version of reduced knockback ehm mana. That's ok. What I am talking about is the old leagues, the old characters. So why do I (and my guildmates) care about them so much. Well, we are roleplayers by heart. Most of our characters aren't built around a skill alone. We don't play builds. Our characters are a combination of items we found and wanted to use and of skills we find fascinating or interesting. We find a fitting name for it, and we plan for it, and then we start building it. We are very attached to them. Every character has it's own unique things to it, things all my other characters are not using in the tree for example. It is kinda hard to explain to someone who doesn't do roleplay. So having to reskill these characters every few months is already a hassle. But I accept that PoE needs to rebalance the tree and the skills, and that there should be some kind of "meta" around the new leagues, so we use our limited time and rebuild the tree to keep playing our chars. Hard enough to do considering GGG doesn't have any tools to help with it, we have to use third party programs to help save old chars and plan the rebuild, so that the new version at least resembles the old one regarding dps, defense and all that. This time around, things get even more complicated with the jewels. Because I can't allocate the slots unless I have them, but I can't farm for them without a fully functioning character, so I have to skill one, farm for jewels (and I'm not even talking about the unique ones) and then reskill again to use them on the appropriate chars. But that is ok, too. Because the jewels seem to be a good idea, they are great to customize chars and to give them even more unique identity. But now comes the change in reduced mana. Not only will I be having some really worthless lvl 20 gems lying around ( albeit some of my guildmates do not own a single lvl 20 gem, because they never leveled one that high. We are casual players...), I will also have to buy some pretty expensive enlightens. Because leveling them yourself will not suffice for a player playing 4-6 hours a week. We will also probably have to regear our characters. Because my sweet vaaled Alphas Howl will not be able to carry that Enlighten I had to buy. See the point I am making here? Some of my guildmates saw this change, and immediately said "Well, that's it then"... If GGG thinks, we are the only guild having that problem, then fine. I will probably continue playing, some of my friends will quit, and I have to live with that. But I have the feeling that we are NOT the only ones. There are many players not reading the forums, not reading Reddit, and not posting anything anywhere. And they will have a really bad surprise waiting for them when they install the next big patch. My proposal for this is as follows: Keep reduced mana as it is. Tweak the numbers to make them fit the new numbers on the auras and heralds. This way nothing changes in standard and hardcore. Make reduced mana legacy. It just doesn't drop anymore, you've done it before. Make a new gem, reduced mana cost for the new leagues. And make Enlighten do whatever you feel like, but don't add another timewall to the game in making us level enlightens, which ain't gonna happen for casual players. Remember: This is not a whine. I am fine with the changes if they are for the new leagues. But please don't mess to much with the old characters, because they represent a part of the history of the game. I hope I could make myself clear on what my feeling towards this is. English isn't my first language. Sincerely, t_golgari. This thread has been automatically archived. Replies are disabled.

" Source? I'm not in the beta but I don't think jewel slots work like that. |

" You can allocate the slots and not put a jewel in it. https://youtu.be/T9kygXtkh10?t=285

" Yes. Sorry for being a little unclear there. You can allocate the points, but allocating points that don't do anything until you actually have a decent jewell will not really help you building a decent character to farm for said jewells, right? |

Do you really think it's significantly worse than a +10 stat node?
Besides, you'll find some jewels very quickly. It might not be exactly what you want, but i don't think the slot will be empty for long.. Guild Leader The Amazon Basin <BASIN> Play Nice and Show Some Class www.theamazonbasin.com Last edited by mark1030#3643 on Jun 5, 2015, 12:26:22 PM

I personally like this change, reduced mana was always mandatory and it used up a 4socket item. They want to reduce socket-pressure and i totally agree with that. Now you can move your auras and heralds into your rings. Hopefully they also remove ""has one Socket"" roll, and make it baseline on rings and maybe for amuletts aswell. Its kinda strange that englithen does it instead, but if its very rare, so be it.

@Pwnzors87:
I am all yours. For the new leagues. I'd like to keep my gem for the old leagues, and be it only for sentimental reasons. Besides: I don't have rings with gemslots. I would have to regear for that. See above... |

" It's not strange, it's bad. Items like Mjolnir or Shavronne's can be rare. Because I can make chars without them. Skills and support gems should not be rare, especially not if they are that universally usefull! Empower is kind of a rare case, where it is often better for your char, but you also need a 6l and all that, so oftentimes I opt out of it because why bother. But Enlighten lvl4 will ALWAYS be the better option. |
