He was a true gentleman of the sport. Being a cricketer from junior level and still playing at the ripe old age of 43, I repected his achievements in the game far more than what he did in the commentary box. His statistics stand up to any of the best cricketers past or present.

The series against the West Indies where there was a tied test was played in the greatest spirit mainly due to his captaincy. By the end of the series, the West Indians were given a parade through Melbourne that was attended by huge crowds that wanted to voice their appreciation. The weird thing was that Australia had a extremely racist immigration policy at the time. They were cheered as sporting heroes but wouldn't be allowed to live in the country. I like to think that Richie Benaud did his small part for equality.
