Triple Herald Shotgun Sustain Ranger

Hello everyone,

After finding out about the three Heralds (Herald of Ash, Lightning and Ice), I decided I wanted to make a build centred around them. I haven't had the chance to test it out due to the lack of resources, but this is what I intend to do. This is a concept I came up with.

Initially I wanted the build to be fully centred around Blood Magic, but the Heralds and Auras had too much Mana Reserved, and I had to very reluctantly abandon it. This build will have its main damage dealing gem as Tornado Shot. This can be replaced with Split Arrow or Barrage depending on preference and circumstances. Poison Arrrow has been incorporated into the build to combat Reflect.

The name "shotgun" comes from the build instantly blowing up monsters, causing an explosive chain reaction on death with Herald of Ice and Ash coupled with a high critical strike chance, while Herald of Lightning's lightning storm effect finishes off the remainder. In theory, this build has the potential to be extremely powerful at farming mobs.

This build's survivability comes from having tremendous amounts of Life Gain on Hit, Mana Leech and Life Leech, utilising the Ghost Reaver notable node.

WARNING: This will be very text-heavy.

Firstly, the Skill Tree:
Spoiler

"

Notables:
"
Iron Grip

The increase to Physical Damage from Strength applies to Projectile Attacks as well as Melee Attacks

Since Rangers are relatively lacking in the Life department, I needed to find some way to give them survivability, hence the spread towards the Marauder area for life, life leech and life gain on hit. Since we bump into many Strength nodes, this node is a good pickup.

"
Point Blank

Projectile Attacks deal up to 50% more Damage to targets at the start of their movement, dealing less Damage to targets as the projectile travels further

Point Blank is a staple for Rangers in my opinion, especially when fighting Dominus with Barrage.

"

Ghost Reaver

Life Leech applies to Energy Shield instead of Life

This node is the one that gives this Ranger build its survivability as it does not affect Life Gain on Hit. Having Life Gain on Hit and Life Leech effectively allows a player to instantly regain Life and Energy Shield at the same time.

"

Elemental Equilibrium

Enemies you hit with Elemental Damage temporarily get +25% Resistances to those Elements and −50% Resistances to other Elements

Since this build uses all three Heralds, Elemental Equilibrium is a very powerful node to have. Enemies will have a constant -25% penalty to their Elemental resistance, making you hit even harder.

Skill Gems

I would like to share what the final build of gems should look like and the theory behind them:

Spoiler
"
Buffs and auras:6L
Herald of Fire - Herald of Ice - Herald of Lightning - Haste - Empower - Reduced Mana

These are the MVPs of this build. Depending on what you need, Haste can be replaced with Purity of Elements for Elemental Resistance or Determination for armour, depending on what you think you need. I personally really do want Haste. If you do too and still want some tankiness, the other 2 auras previously mentioned may be incorporated into a different gem link which will be explained further below.

"
Damaging Spells: 6L
Tornado Shot - Blood Magic - LMP/GMP - Life Gain on Hit - Chain - Culling Strike

Tornado Shot may be replaced with Split Arrow or Barrage, depending on which you prefer. Barrage is specifically for Dominus when he casts Rain of Blood, and you need to go into his protective bubble.

Blood Magic is needed as most of your mana pool will be used to cast your Auras and Buffs. LMP and GMP are mandatory on any ranged spell, and Life Gain on Hit is the gem that gives you your Life sustainability, since Ghost Reaver will convert Life gain from Life Leech into Energy Shield. Chain is an extremely powerful support gem to have especially with skills that hit multiple targets. Culling Strike is for the shotgun factor, allowing the effects of Herald of Ice and Herald of Ash to proc earlier, and may be replaced with Increased Item Quality or Increased Item Quantity.

"
Offense: 4L
Cast on Critical Strike - Arc - Power Charge on Critical - Spell Echo

This is what happens when you crit. Arc will cast, giving Power Charges while casting twice from Spell Echo, giving you a higher chance to crit. More crits -> More Power Chargers -> More crits. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a way to get the increased Power Charges nodes, we will have to do with 3. 150% isn't a small amount either.

"
Chaos Burn: 4L
Poison Arrow - LMP/GMP/Increased Area of Effect - Increased Duration/Concentrated Effect - Blood Magic
Poison Arrow - Aura - Increased Duration/Concentrated Effect - Reduced Mana

When you meet Reflect or Bosses who are just too tanky, shooting a round of Poison Arrow and running about does the job perfectly fine too, albeit a little time consuming. Increased Duration is needed to maximise the Chaos cloud duration. There are 2 ways to go about these 4 sockets. The first one is maximising the damage from Poison Arrow, using Blood Magic as its cost. I did consider Mana Leech, but most of the time if you were taking too much damage, you would probably be shooting a cloud on the ground instead of directly at the monster, and so I scrapped that idea. LMP, GMP and Increased Area of Effect provide essentially the same result: a larger poison cloud. LMP and GMP give more control over the size of the cloud you want, but Increased Area of Effect works fine too. Concentrated effect may be used in place of Increased Duration.

The second one is if you decide that you need more tankiness. Purity of Elements and Determination can be used here, which explains another Reduced Mana gem. A trade of damage for survivability or vice versa is the key point here. The auras here can be swapped with the one in the 6L since we will be using Alpha's Howl, it's personal preference.

Now comes the part where the player can choose between mobility and defence:
"
Defence: 4L
Cast When Damage Taken - Ice Nova - Increased Critical Strikes - Added Cold Damage

The idea here is to freeze anyone hard hitting enough to allow for time to escape. Since Ice Nova hits all monsters in your immediate vicinity, Increased Critical Strikes and Added Cold Damage really helps to freeze an entire mob and to buy you time. However, this skill would hit maximum effectiveness at level one where it would be spammed on every hit. You would be casting it very often, but would not be dealing a lot of damage end game, but that isn't the point. The point is to freeze those who dare to hit you. The Poison Arrow/Aura route in the previous section synergises well with this defensive gem link.

"
Mobility: 3L
Lightning Warp - Reduced Duration - Faster Casting

This branch is quite self-explanatory. Lightning Warp in this case is used to get around quickly to save time or to reposition. It is very effective against mobs and bosses that use Leap Strike or Flicker Strike, or Brutus and Dominus who have skills that pull you towards them.

Items:
Spoiler
The more important components are the Bow, Quiver and Helm. It doesn't really matter for the other pieces of armour, but below are the ideal items for this build:

Weapons:
Spoiler
Bow: Death's Harp, Death Bow
An Additional Arrow combined with Chain and LMP or GMP makes you hit even harder, fuelling the Shotgun theme. The massive amount of Critical Strike Chance from this Unique makes it even more useful to this build as it is a shotgun build aimed to kill things instantly.

Quiver: Drillneck, Penetrating Arrow Quiver
The chance to Pierce makes this quiver very highly sought after, increasing AOE.

Armour:
Spoiler
Chest: Thousand Ribbons, Simple Robe OR Queen of the Forest, Destiny Leather
The amount of resistances this Unique gives are staggering, not to mention Elemental Proliferation. Monsters you have ignited and killed will ignite other monsters around, allowing for a secondary form of DPS.

Queen of the Forest will give us more defensive bonuses in terms of Evasion Rating. The penalty to Movement Speed will be easily offset by Haste or even by its implicit mod, so that should be no problem.

Helm: Alpha's Howl, Sinner Tricorne OR Rat's Nest, Ursine Pelt
Alpha's Howl is used primarily for the Mana Reservation effect (8%). The additional 2 levels to Aura Gems is also very useful.

Rat's Nest provides a nice boost to mobility and critical strike chance, while having Increased Rarity.

Gloves: Maligaro's Virtuosity, Deerskin Gloves
This is used for its obscene amounts of Critical Strike Chance. The extra cast speed is nice too.

Boots: Atziri's Step, Slink Boots
The Chance to Dodge Spell Damage is the important point here. Any other boots with high Life and Resistances are fine as well.

Accesories:
Spoiler
Belt: Wurm's Molt, Leather Belt
The Mana Leech solves any mana sustainability problems.

Rings: The Taming, Prismatic Ring and/or any Berek Ring
The Taming gives 5% chance to inflict status ailments. Getting this item is quite difficult, but the stats it gives are worth it in my opinion. Berek's Pass +5000 armour when Frozen isn't needed as Alpha's Howl has "Cannot be Frozen"; Berek's Respite gives Elemental Proliferation that synergises with Herald of Ash; and Berek's Grip gives insane amounts of sustainability.

Amulet: Warped Timepiece, Turquoise Amulet
This amulet gives your leeches 30% higher leech rate, allowing for less Life and Mana flasks and allows for more usage of Defensive flasks.

Let me know what you think and what I can do to improve, I'm currently aiming to build this on my Ranger, all constructive criticism is welcome :D
Hi,

sorry but your idea is horrible. So many mistakes in that I don't even know where to start:

minor things
- 120 Points tree GL leveling that
- you didn't have the resources to test any of that but you plan with 2 6ls
- your route out of ranger start is horrible
- pointblank is bad (you have super low defs but will have to get close to kill stuff
- you didn't take aura reservation notes so you can't use the gems you want with empower
- your 4l chaos setup is horrible (GMP or LMP are horrible, and even if you use something else it will do not dmg at all
- your 4l cwdt setup does nothing to save you (OK it slows enemys a bit, but if you take dmg cause of ele reflect it will just do more dmg to you)
- drillneck is not used because it has 10% pierce chance

major things
- your 4l with CoC does not work as you think it does (in your build it does not work at all)
- elemenetal equilibrium does not work as you think it does (in your build it makes everything have 50% more res)
- besides a bit of life you have no defenses
- reflect will wreck you if manage to do dmg with your idea
- you want to use a drillneck but you don't have any pierce
- your gear will lack INSANE amounts of res, if you can get to 0 res with all the uniques you want to use you can be glad

That is what I spotted in 3min I think there are some more problems, tbh. the whole idea shows that you lack a good bit of knowledge about machanics and gems. IMHO you are better of following a guide for your first build till you understand a bit more what you can do and how to accomplish some things, you will also collect currencys then an can start your own build ideas after that.

Regards

Although I applaud you for try to build a version of my dream build. I started reading this build with extremely high hopes, but on completion of reading this build I had only one opinion of this build, it isn't even SC viable.

Positive feedback-(somewhat positive)
-Now I do think based on some of your minor problems you used to theory craft this build that you barely have 3 months of playing path of exiles under your belt.
-you should definitely try to contact me in game as I would love to attempt to help u theory craft a build centered around the Herald of(Ash, Thunder, Ice).
-I have theory crafted about 8 viable builds, so I know my way around the tree to a degree.
-I would not try this build as most of the gear u list is not even beginner friendly.
- and it is way to expensive.
- u had me interested when u listed death harp uner ur mvp items. but the minute u also said drillneck I new this build was doomed.
-you claim to have attempted this build with blood magic and it didn't work. so why r u still using it(aside form the fact its the only way to use attacks.)
- I have a semi noob solution for u buy mirror worthy crafted jewelry with -8 mana cost on it. skills will cost no mana at all if u use it properly along with gathering certain nodes from the tree that reduce mana cost of skills.
-my first theory crafted herald of elements build was better then this gear wise.
Just pointing out some other mistakes that add to the ones the others before me have found :
- Cast on Crit does not work how you think it does. You need to link it to an attack that will crit and then with spells that will be cast once you crit. That 4L right there won't do a thing.
- Your Poison burn setup will probably be ridiculously weak since you aren't scaling its damage on the tree because you aren't playing a Poison Arrow build
- Your CwDT with Ice Nova is pretty much useless, if you want some added survivability, get a CwDT + Enduring Cry + Immortal Call while the 1.3 is live and then test around with the new ways to get a more beefy in 2.0
- That Lightning Warp setup. Please. You're using a bow, use Blink Arrow, it's much better and requires less links...
