Game locks my PC, any ideas?
I have been having an intermittent problem that now seems to be a permanent problem. Last night the game hung with no error but it also completely locks my PC, i can't do anything with the keyboard, the image is frozen and the mouse i can move but the cursor is the waiting circle cursor. The only resolution is to reboot the PC but as soon as i load POE again the same happens.
Things I have tried. 1) Different games - other games work fine 2) Temperatures - Very low, GPU in the 40's, CPU in the 20's. 3) Disabled 3D settings in the control panel for poe 4) Renamed production_config.ini so game generates a new one 5) Tried windowed mode and full screen mode 6) Re-installed the game 7) Re-installed NVidia graphics drivers 8) Tried different versions of NVidia graphics drivers 9) Custom NVidia install to only install the graphics drivers. 10) Malware/AV scans 11) Onboard graphics card runs the game fine although not really good enough other than checking your stash. 12) 3D mark firestrike runs fine with a score of 9192, http://www.3dmark.com/fs/3938261 13) Tried running the game with nothing else running 14) My spec is below, there is no overclock 15) I have 1 graphics card, no SLI 16) Tried various compatability modes Motherboard - GIGABYTE Z97X-SLI CPU - Intel Core i5-4690K Memory - 2x4GB kingston KHX2400C11D3 GPU - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 Windows 8.1 |

Just to help out, can you post a DXDiag?
Can you give it a go with the -nosound command line and see if the problem replicates or with the -swa? Seems weird that it will run happily with the Onboard but give you shit with the 970. == Officially Retired 27/02/2019 ==
Massive thanks to GGG for producing such a fun and engaging game, it has taken up faaaaaaar too much of my life over the last 5 years. Best of luck in the future! |

" Thanks for your response but Sods law, game is working fine again now without doing anything. Next time it happens ill bump this thread with my dxdiag and ill try the -swa switch. I have tried the -nosound switch before and that had no effect. Out of interest, I assume there are going to be multiple load balanced servers. Would I have affinity to one server for a certain time frame? Edit - Just hope that i can hit the reset button fast enough before the problem takes my third hardcore character :) Last edited by richard1032 on Jan 30, 2015, 7:04:37 AM

" The affinity is only based on region... so if you pick EU gateway, you're more likely to get on an EU server than a US server (although it's not guaranteed)... but that will have nothing to do with locking up on your PC. As for the "reset button", that also won't help at all. There is a minimum 6 second delay to timeout. Doesn't matter if you lose network, have a pc lockup, or otherwise "disappear" from the server's point of view. If the game works fine on the onboard video but not with the dedicated card, it could be that the dedicated card is stressing your system too much causing the lockup, or the drivers are malfunctioning. In most cases I've seen, it's usually not drivers, although it's still recommended to update them often. Double check your card settings, and your PSU model. It is possible that your PSU can't properly support your GPU, or you have bad timings or other power settings on your card. Good luck. | |
So it's been almost 2 weeks since this happened last but it just did. I have played most evenings since then without an issue and 10 minutes after starting the game tonight it frooze and now it freezes whenever i run poe. Just tried the -swa with the same result.
