here's something I learned, during my (very) brief trading career:

assume you'd like to buy something, and XYZ says the seller is online at IGN "foobar".

you enter the game and type "/whois foobar".
the response is this character isn't online.

at this point there are 2 options: either the guy is online on another character, or he's using some script to keep himself "online" in XYZ, while he isn't.

so you PM foobar.

what the game does here, is redirect the PM to the character that's currently online on this account, if such a character is found.

if the guy is indeed online and responds, at this point you get a PM back from character "barfoo".

so you can either ask him directly if he can trade at the moment, or just do "/whois barfoo", and get a response "barfoo is a level 99 Shadow in Bloodlines League, currently trying to kill Uber Atziri, while the item you are trying to buy is in Standard".

so you wait patiently until he RIPs :)
