If the person is playing a different character, the /whois shows them as offline whereas if you add them as a friend, you can see if they're online on any character, including those in other leagues. That's why people either add you as a friend or send you a whisper wondering if you're online.

Dude please do some research before creating such ridicoulus threads. If you /whois someone with his forum or "IGN" name he posted, that usually results in POE saying he is offline, although he is marked as online in XYZ. You cant even whipser him then... This is esspecially true if he is playing in a different league. The only thing u can do then is to add him as friend, because this way you will see he is online with another character and therefore you are able to make the trade. This is the only way to message someone ingame whos is online with a character whos name u dont know (if you know at least one name of his chars). So this thread is garbage. Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.
