Framerate Issue Help

I bought and pieced together my own computer a few months ago since my hardware from before didnt seem to be able to handle the game. After I upgraded my computer I noticed PoE still had frequent framerate drops that often cut in my gameplay/survivability. When running into packs my screen often freezes for 0.5-1 second or the framerate simiply drops to 15-20 FPS several times during the encounter. In a game based on split second decisions I find it very difficult to play because of this. I've looked around online for solutions but all I have found is "The game is not optimized" and comments from GGG saying it's the hardware. If its indeed the hardware how come I still experience these frame drops with some of the best hardware on the market?
I am only here to find a solution not to point fingers. I'd like to know if I'm missing something. I have installed all the latest drivers for my rig and have even tried adjusting the graphics settings in PoE. None of these have helped. Try tech support. Dunno why you wouldn't be running fine. You might post your dxdiag to help someone figure out if there's a conflict somewhere.

Do you play windowed, windowed borderless or fullscreen? Do you have vsync on (standard or adaptive)? Is your CPU overclocked? Do you only face this problem with PoE? Did you try tweaking the manage 3d settings in nvidia control panel?
There's a lot you can do to "improve" performance by just tweaking some settings. | |

You have basically the identical PC I built myself.
I have no issues playing PoE. The difference might be that you're running Win 8.1 and I use Win7 Ultimate 64-bit. I also tweaked my settings for best performance. I have ALL the video options maxed inside PoE without any problem. The only thing I did was turn off the screen-shake since I don't like it. I have also disabled the in-game chats as I don't use/like those either, and they DO cause some performance problems. Have you checked all your temperatures? I found that with the stock cooler on the 4790K, I was getting EXCESSIVE heating. I had to under-clock my CPU severely until I was able to get a better cooler for it (which I did and it is running back on "default"). I'd recommend something like HWMonitor to verify your temperatures and make sure you're not getting throttled due to excessive heat. | |

I have made a few changes and noticed a slight difference in performance. I changed settings in the nvidia control panel for performance and changed PoE from windowed to fullscreen.
I still get the framerate drops like before, perhaps not as much but still happens. I have not checked my temperature of my CPU but my videocard's temp is defintely fine though. (i think it just hits 40c). Drakier, you brought up a valid issue I read about when I bought my i7-4790k. I'll try the HWMonitor to check my CPUs temp and get a bigger cooler. I'll post another update once I try these out. |

SO HWMonitor says my cores are reaching 70c easy while idealling. Just launching PoE (doing nothing else in the game) raised it to 85c in 5 mins. From the looks of it, this might be too high from what I read so far.
Going to try remounting my cpu with a new cooler later today. If anyone can confirm that these temperatures are not ideal for my setup that would be awesome. Would let me know I found a potential issue. |

Looks like your temperatures are the likely culprit.
Underclock it and try and keep it around 75 max, and test to see if you get the same problems. If you haven't tried turning shadows, post processing, and anti-aliasing off completely, and making sure that V-sync is on - again this should help maintain a lower temperature across both the CPU and GPU. Just a follow up...
I bought a better CPU fan which has dropped my temperatures down to 50C running PoE with alot of enemies on the screen. Not a single hicup. Been testing for about a week to make sure and this seems to have fixed my issue. Been thinking it was my videocard this whole time and it was actually my CPU. |
