Can I Use the PoE launcher with Steam created account?

I created my PoE account via Steam games installer/app.
I'm at a friends place and she has PoE installed but it's not with steam, it's with the PoE launcher.

I can't seem to login to my account using my steam details via the PoE launcher.

The Messages i get are

Connection to loin server
Connect to login server
Authenticating User...
The Specified account does not exist
An unexpected disconnection occurred.


Is there a way around this?
