Constant freeze/crash to desktop since 1.2

Performance seems to be much worse since 1.2 overall. Framerates are, on average, much lower, and fluctuate wildly.
I also now get a crash to desktop or a total system lockup approximately every 15 to 20 minutes, rendering the game pretty close to literally unplayable. Haven't experienced anything like this prior to 1.2, but since 1.2 I have experienced this constantly. It's worth noting that +2 maps are a dangerous thing.
