EXP boosting gems with rings/enlighten?
2x Perandus Signet 6%
Chitus' Apex 5% level 6 enhance gem 30% The Supreme Truth 5% With the following items what would be the best way to boost gems quickly to level 20? I.e bunch of purity of fire gems to level 20 and not caring about your level. Would leeching a 78 map with 5 people be the best? or somewhere with high mob density like the forest? keep in mind this is for gem leveling only. |

Lunaris 3 IMO.
Great mob density, no penalty on drops, and gems still get max XP. You can also farm piety as a side bonus. IGN: Smegmazoid

" I don't believe so. The earlier you run maps, the higher the level of the maps, the longer it takes to get gems in terms of your character's level. Yoour character will get more exp, but the gems don't seem to. I usually am around level 92 when I get level 20 gems, because I start maps early and do high level maps early, and I also play on HC so I don't have any exp loss from deaths. This leads me to believe hat gems don't benefit from the map exp. Current IGN: TheBearerOfLight

" I disagree completely. Imo the only reason you feel that way is because the clear speed on high maps is lower than what you were doing previously. High level maps/area definitely give more xp, to yourself or gem, it's the same thing. Most glaring evidence is the gigantic xp gain difference between alluring abyss and the apex (base on gem here, so the argument of xp penalty for the apex is larger since it's a lower lvl zone doesnt hold ) Last edited by 0versky#1706 on Jul 1, 2014, 2:09:09 PM

" They do on a monster-by-monster basis, but when you factor in the fact that gems don't suffer an XP penalty, XP efficiency shifts completely. The main reason you start needing to run higher level maps as you get to higher levels is that character xp incurs a larger and larger penalty the further ahead of monster level you become. The difference between a level 67 monster's and a level 72 monster's base XP is not actually that great. But when you factor in the penalty, that base xp difference is compounded with a higher penalty resulting in a much bigger difference. Let's say for example, a level 66 monster grants a base XP gain of 100, and a level 70 monster grants a base xp of 120 and your character is level 75. (I'm pulling these small, easy to work with numbers out of my ass just as an example). This a mere 20% difference by itself, not a huge deal. Now, we'll say that you incur a 5% xp penalty per level above the zone, meaning the level 66 area incurs a 45% penalty, and the 70 area incurs a 25% penalty. The 100 becomes 55 xp, and the 120 becomes 90 xp. We went from a difference of 20% to a difference of 64% in XP gain just by factoring in the penalty. Gems don't get this penalty though, so the speed that you can steamroll lower level areas ends up far exceeding the base XP difference. Not to mention, running a regular merc zone keeps you from wasting maps. And again, these numbers are totally arbitrary and simplified for the sake of illustrating a point. I'm sure you could find the exact numbers on the wiki to come up with a 100% ideal way to boost gems if you're feeling like a math-lete. IGN: Smegmazoid

" The gems gain more exp, but as an answer to the OP I meant that it is not necessarily the best way to level gems, namely doing high level maps. I didn't quote the right person, or I wasn't thinking. They do gain more exp as you enter higher level areas, yes. What I really meant was that it isn't worth doing high level maps simply in an attempt to level gems faster. They do gain more exp per monster, but that doesn't mean they will gain more exp per time you play (someone already pointed out the fact that they are not affected by the exp penalty that characters are affected by). If you can clear the highest content at the same speed that you can clear lower content, then go ahead OP. Best for leveling gems in order are:
uber Atziri normal Atziri Cowards Trial with Poorjoy's Asylum somewhere on the list Death and Taxes might be interesting, not entirely sure tho It's all about mob density and killspeed. Atziri maps give crazy XP with extrem density of blue mobs. Imho you should avoid areas with dead ends like Lunaris to maximise killspeed. Strand, Gorge and Plateau maps should work nice with packsize. |

Actually I think Poorjoy's is the best of the bunch if you can faceroll it. I recall getting roughly 6m gem XP from a Poorjoy's run. Apex gives me roughly 3m. Not sure about Alluring Abyss, but doing that for gem XP is out of the question anyway so who cares.
If you're not super geared though, Coward's Trial is probably the best way to go. |

it's possible that poorjoy's is better than both apex and abyss.
but in general i would say the best way to exp gems is apex runs as they are cheap, huge gem exp, and fast. 200 or so apex runs will take a 20Q empower/enhance from 2 -> 3. acton's nightmare is probably somewhere on the list as well if you are geared for it and don't waste time killing shit you already killed. it's a massive map, and very dense.
