'Not enough Mana' message - why?

I've started running two aura's for the first time, each linked to its own 'reduce mana' gem. They use up 80% of my mana reserve, instead of the 100% they would normally take up. If I put my curser across them though I see a note saying there's not enough mana. Why? It seems like the aura's aren't working, though that could be just my imagination. Is it because I've stacked them and should run them separately? I have a point to use in reserve, plus 5 refund points, so I can refine things to add more mana if necessary. The mana pool is around 1100 at present, with 60 reg. per second.
Which Auras do you use?
What level is your reduced mana gem?
Also, it is not necessary to use 2 different gems, just link both auras to the same reduced mana.

Your tooltip shows the exact amount reserved after reduced mana i applied. I assume it's still more than 50% per aura.
Also, increasing your mana pool won't help because mana reserved from auras is a % of your max mana (except for Clarity).

So you have them linked to a level 11 Reduced Mana gem, for a 20% reduced reservation?

If so, 60% auras will reserve 48% per, and two of them would reserve 96% of your mana. This leaves 4% of 1,100, which is 44 mana. Enough to run some skills, but not most 5+ links.

If your auras are reserving more than the normal amount, it is likely that you have them linked to a support gem. Enhance, Increased Area of Effect, and other gems will apply to them but will offer nothing when compared to the drastic increase in cost. Make sure this is not the case.
Okay, I'm a little confused. Bear with me, because I'm fairly new to the game and this is my first build.

Just to explain, the reason I have them linked to separate 'reduce mana' gems is that it would weaken my flame totem to put both aura's on the same link. Flame totem used to be Flame totem/Fire penetration/Iron Will/Mana reduction, but when I decided I wanted to try and run two aura's I took out the fire penetration and and slotted Determination there. Purity of ice I've run for quite a while on a 3-link glove that has Vulnerability and Mana Reduction on it. I could move Vulnerability to another blue slot that sits on its own on the glove and move Determination to the linked area, but what are the odds I can get that blue socket to turn red and leave the others exactly as they are on an Armour/Evasion glove that i really need because of the mana/life regeneration it adds to the recipe? I feel like I might be playing with fire on that one, especially as I once blew about 150 chromes fruitlessly trying to change a four socket item to a certain colour combination I wanted.

To clarify another point made, the MR gem in the Fire Totem setup is at level 17 - I used to use it for a Molten Shell arrangement but decided to shift it over to the fire totem setup instead because it gets a lot of heavy use. The other one is level 8 and obviously moving up quickly. Bear in mind that a lot if this was set up when my mana was pretty weak, and I've recently been concentrating on beefing the numbers up a bit via gear and the passive skill tree - that's why I thought I was in a position to start using two auras.

Finally, as of this moment Purity of Ice is reserving 33% (as against 40%) while Determination is reserving 44%, instead of the usual 60%. So that should in theory be leaving me approximately a quarter of my mana for other purposes, right?
Are you running the auras when you look at them? That message just means you don't have enough mana to cast something. If it says that when you have your full amount of mana (not counting reserved because that's not usable), it means you don't have enough mana to cast it. If it's already running you don't need to cast it, so it's fine.

You really should try to keep Determination out of your main skill links. You're giving up a lot of DPS losing Fire Penetration even though the tooltip doesn't take that into account.

Edit: you can see if the auras are on by looking at the buff icons in your upper left.

Oh, and if your aura is supported by a support gem, the mana reserved will be multiplied by the mana multiplier. Didn't think of that until I hit submit. But that's probably why you don't have enough mana available to cast you aura.

Okay, that is one thing that was confusing me. I see the message saying 'not enough mana' yet the aura icons are showing up in the top left hand corner. Also if I look through the stat sheets on my build the extra armour and and cold resistance show there as well - that's why I couldn't figure why I was getting the message when all seemed to be working well.

Thanks also for the heads up on Fire penetration. As you say, it doesn't show up in the tooltips, even though the icon for the totem shows it's been accepted. I've never really known for sure if it was actually contributing anything at all, other than helping to cut through monsters with fire resistance. So I just kept it in and let it keep accumulating levels. Was up to 17 and well on its way to 18 when I slipped it out to put Determination in for some extra armour.
