So whats the story of POE? Is Wraeclast caught in a cursed cycle of destruction?

Hey guys,

I think I follow the jist of the main story arc of POE.

Wraeclast is basically a cursed continent, due to some form of disaster which occured a few hundred years prier to our Exiles arriving with Piety and Dominus in tow.

The eternal empire was destroyed from the inside out due to this cataclysm.

However a similair event also destroyed the vaal a number of thousand years earlier?

Does anyone know of a link or a thread which explain the storyline/ lore of POE?

Cheers

Basically you're right though, except I believe the Vaal were destroyed two thousand years ago. A lot of things that aren't covered on the wiki are speculative still. For example I don't think it's known what actually caused the Eternal cataclysm, except for that it likely has something to do with Lady Dialla.

I'm guessing that GGG is saving a lot of that story to be revealed in Act 4 or even later acts.
I think it's unknown what caused the Eternal cataclysm, but the Vaal cataclysm was caused by some ritual that Atziri did. There are references to Doryani (an assistant of Atziri) creating some "cradle" of virtue gems, and that whatever him and Atziri were doing with it would either cause immortality or death for nearly all of the Vaal.
Well, i think wraeclast is the world we live in if im not mistaken and we are exiled to some continent because of our crimes. Dominus judged us and sent us here and then we fight our way towards him and if he would have killed us he would harvest our collected power because he said we are an instrument. I take it he wanted to experiment just like piety did with gems and human bodies.
This is one thing that needs to be improved in this game. In comparable games, you have an idea of why you are doing what you are doing.

In Diablo, you are in Tristram to investigate a church. The whole thing unravels and you find out you bit off a bit more than you can chew.

In the sequel, you are swept on a chase for a mysterious hooded figure, which culminates in the supposed final encounter with The Lord of Terror himself.

I have not played the third game.

In Titan Quest, you are chasing entities who obtained a macguffin that is the only thing preventing the Titans from rampaging through the world again. Culminates in the battle with Kronos. Then the expansion comes in and you find out it was Hades all along.

Here in Wraeclast. You are... Doing what again?

EDIT:
Don't confuse Lore with actual story. Path of Exile is rich with Lore. What with the Eternal Empire, the Vaal, Oriath and the whole thing about the war waged by the Karui. What does it all have to do with what your character is doing? NONE. All it does is set up why Wraeclast is such a shithole.

I am guessing that they do not give a shit about story, that's why PoE has one of the most boring lores ever made.
@Hodari
Maybe, but I wouldn't count on it. Considering all we got in SotV was a couple texts in the corrupted areas, flavor texts from the uniques and the voice lines for Atziri herself..

@vulcanfury12
You bring up a good point. Apart from revenge, the PCs don't have much of a reason to kill Dominus, Piety or, well, anyone.. I suppose the Templar could want to 'purify' his religion of Dominus, since he is kind of sending people to their deaths by exiling them and just generally being an unpleasant person. I don't see what motive other than simple revenge the others could have.

Also why would Dominus follow you to the land he exiled you? Unless his ascension to Godhood requires an exceptional individual, then yes, it's possible that one person will be able to ascend the Sceptre out of the hundreds or thousands he exiled. Even then, his plan hinges on the exile having prior knowledge about Wraeclast and somehow the exile knowing that Dominus is waiting for him at the top of the Sceptre.
I know a lot about the lore of the world, but I will admit, I'm still not clear WHY your PC is doing ANYTHING.

Some things, you guess by context, like trying to save the lovers (why bother, though?) and stopping the Darkness. But otherwise? Meh.
