How to farm currency for late-game items?
Although I'm not a new player anymore (playing for 4 months now), I still do not know how to attain enough currency for those real end-game items like a 6L chest or even not-soultaker-tier uniques, like Aegis Aurora which is around 8ex or less.
Yes, I know and am using the Chaos/Regal/GCP recipes. Yes, I have a shop and am selling all the gems and items I don't need with a b/o. Yes, I am playing mid-high level maps (70-75), almost always with a full party and mostly with an MF culler. Yes, I often join public piety/dom split run parties. All these things do not provide enough currency for me to buy stuff that costs 8ex, let alone 15-20ex or more. Flipping items is too tedious for me, besides, I want to play the game, not trade all day. So my question is: am I missing something? Or is the point of this game simply not being able to buy stuff like that unless you get lucky with a gg unique drop? Is it all RNG, in that case? If I can't get enough currency for buying mid-tier costly items, how am I ever going to get enough currency to try and craft items myself? One streamer suggested farming the corrupted area in City of Sarn for the Midnight piece. But the boss there is Rima and I absolutely do not dare confronting her for an off-chance of getting a 1.5ex map piece and a high chance of losing 10% xp at level 85, when getting that xp would take a lot of time, especially since I am not managing to sustain high-level maps (although I always run those in a full party). This isn't a QQ post, I'm honestly just trying to understand what I am missing. Cause the so called "late-game" for me atm seems only like mindless grinding on maps that are too low of a level for my player level, hoping for a nice (i.e. not-trash tier unique) drop. Leveling takes ages, getting better gear seems like a dream. 1H+Shield High Block&Spell Block Tank: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/868995

Hard to believe that by doing all that you can't afford 8ex item. Chaos recipe itself provides a lot of currency (I use unid for 2 chaos late game). Als, Jewelers, Fuses and Chroms all add up pretty nicely.
I personally rarely buy 5l/6l. What I do is get 6s version of item I want (say Infernal Mantle) and then try and link it myself. If you succeed in few fuses you just sell it and buy another one to repeat. Hope it helps a bit. I AM MAD

If you're self-found (like me) you dont get enough high level currency to do much other than lollygag at it in your stash.
The traders in the game get their currency to buy their items from, well, trading. You have to be a skilled trader to be able to afford 10 ex items because you're never going to have 10 exalts any other way. So develop a MF toon that can farm Piety or the Vaal and farm a billion rares, looking for some that are worth selling, then eventually trade up for the gear you want. There isnt that much alternative until you've gotten to the "I'm so dang rich" stage. |

Farm maps and search poe.xyz.is for buyouts and pray for drops. I had an extremely good day yesterday in the 2.5 hours I got to play.
This amazing belt dropped, and since the implicit was stun duration I vaal orbed it. I'm ok with the results. Then a twin boss pier map dropped me this with 25IIR Then I picked up this Aegis from forums for 2.5exalts because someone had corrupted it without socketing it or 20qing it first. Obviously I'd prefer a non corrupt one, but I did not have 7 exalts. I did have 2 exalts and 14 chaos. I didn't get anything as a drop last league. It's just RNG. Kill stuff faster to get better odds. Anarchy/Onslaught T shirt

What you're missing is probably that you've already had at least 8 exalts worth of currency pass through your stash without even knowing it.
drop a few alts here and there on items/strongboxes 4L/fuse some items GCP on gems etc. If you want to buy big items you have to convert all your small currencies into bigger currencies and not spend it on minor stuff. People who farm every day don't just find exalts, they find tons of worthless crap and convert it up into bigger currencies. You don't have to spam in trade chat to convert them either, as long as you are willing to take a small loss in profit. If you sell at reasonable rates people will buy your currency in an instant. I have the same problem, I get like 100 alts then i blow them all on a strongbox or something when I know i should convert them into chaos to save them. It's so much wasted money... :( Also i waste tons of chance orbs on crap that will probably never ever make a unique IGN: OldManBalls (Warbands) Last edited by demivion#2965 on Mar 19, 2014, 9:06:25 AM

This game has an economy, and if you don't want to learn how to use it, or you choose to ignore it, you will never have the better items.
I played D3 for a year, nothing ever dropped for me, but I had really good gear from learning how to trade. I have played PoE for about 3 months (since D3 went to Hell) and I was worth about 12ex in domination before it merged into Standard. Playing the economy is part of the game. If you don't want to trade you should buddy up with people that do, or maybe the best solution for you is to join a guild that will trade items for you. |

Someone above said that 10 ex can't be made by just farming. I played self-found in Domination, but wanted to explore the trading side, so in Ambush I've been selling currency and drops. Making 10 ex is definitely do-able in a reasonable period of time even (or maybe: especially) if all you do is farm Piety.
Even without luck, all the lower currency can be traded to chaos with relative ease, especially if you use a site like poexchange.info (which is my solution since I don't want to deal with the trade channel spam) and don't insist on the most favorable ratios (sell alts at 18:1 instead of 16:1, for example). Then there is the chaos recipe which requires only stash space, and all those 1-5 chaos uniques. In Ambush, these sell quickly. Sometimes you get a good drop, like this baby: But those are really just luck (I had probably 30 IIR when that dropped and it was on a map). I found nothing of an equal value in 800 hours of playing before. Still, those really aren't necessary, you can grind out currency. Other than flipping, currency is made by grinding. Not maps, those are for XP, but Merveil and Piety, and Dominus if you can do him quickly and safely. But flipping is how you can get really rich. It doesn't appeal to me in PoE, so I don't do it, but then again, I also have no expensive item wishes and prefer to make builds that work with cheaper stuff. | |
" Maybe I wasnt clear. You cant get 10 exalts by farming without selling stuff for exalts. I've been playing since early Beta - I have 4 exalts - all I've ever found in the game - never used one. If you're willing to invest time and effort in trading, getting 10 exalts is not hard - I've got LOTS of gear worth lots of exalts - all self-found. I just hate to spend my game time on this, so I go self-found only. If you do that, you resign yourself a bit to never having the ability to just design a build with gear you "plan to get" in the future. All of this is self-found and most of it is in my stash waiting for a rainy day... But I have |

" I make most of mine by selling 1-3 chaos items, not exalt worthy stuff. Logged on for 3 hours yesterday, sold 15 items at 2c each, thats an exalt. Anarchy/Onslaught T shirt

" You can trade alteration orbs, chromatic orbs, etc. for chaos orbs (at worst, it's 20:1 for alts and chromatics), or two fuses for a chaos orb, or two to three alchemy orbs for a chaos, and then buy an exalted orb for 22-26 chaos orbs. Or are you saying that you can't get ten exalted orbs without any form of trading? I'd agree with that. In over 800 hours, I found only one exalted orb, but I found easily 120-150 chaos orbs (as chaos orbs) and several thousands of alteration and chromatic orbs (drops and vendor returns). You can just run Merveil every two minutes and sell all yellows to a vendor, and you'll make several chaos orbs per hour in form of other currency. There will also be drops that can be sold (the occasional unique). It's boring, and won't give much xp after a certain point, but it's a sure way to make currency (at the expense of slower leveling). It's not as fast as flipping, but it works. Piety is then the step up, and she has the potential to drop the good stuff. |
