Inventory Management Minigame?
Just curious if I'm the only one who finds the entire inventory management thing a little obsolete and ridiculous. Is this 1990 where I need someone to hold my hand while I try to fit items into the boxes? Can't it just be a list of items? Just wondering what the point is of something like this, I was under the impression that we all knew what R Pee Gees were and we were past the point of trying to be like one. I am here to enjoy myself not be irritated with nit picking little details like this.

It is a conscious design decision by the devs. The point is that you need to think what to pick up and what to leave - it's another type of resource management in the game.
If you're irritated by it, a simple rule of thumb is to only collect small items (those taking up 4 spaces or less). Except for rares and uniques of course. |

For a moment I was thinking you were going to suggest a Tetris minigame for the inventory where your current loot falls in from the top like it would in actual Tetris, you can rotate the "pieces", complete rows will clear out like you'd expect them to in a Tetris game and the difficulty/speed of the minigame will increase over time. Once the game is over your inventory is restored.
A nice time waster if you will. (Possibly added as an easter egg activated by typing "/Tetris" in to chat) Also (On topic) most RPG's worth a damn have a Backpack Capacity limit and this system that PoE uses is an alternative method of representing that limit. But I don't understand why 5 rows and not 6?
Small items (helmet, gloves, boots) are 2 => 3*3 Medium items (some swords, bows, etc) are 3 => 2*3 Large items (big weapons, bodys) are 4 => 1 big + 1 small 5 rows never fit except you find tons of orbs, gems, belts :(. |

" Are you serious? Have you played a game like skyrim where the inventory layout is strictly restricted by the fact that it has to work on consoles either? List of items are crazyly tedous at least for me. Aou have a simple inventory with pictures of your items, which make them destiguable very well. Also pressing Alt to show the sockets and links would not work on a list of items. With the system as it is there is everything you need to see promptly, no stupid scrolling and whatever. Yes the inventory doesnt sort itself neither does the stash. But that allows for players making up their own sorting system in the stash. And the unsorted inventory is only a burden, when youre allready full of itmes but one more would fit it if it were sorted corectly. But honestly, you can just bring up a TP, sel stuff and get back into action picking up that item. Probably consumes less time then sorting the inventory manually. There are enough TPs really to work it this way. Also the system the OP mentioned of only picking up small items, rares and legendaries works well. IF you have a good stock of standart orbs allready you dont need to pack every item. Just take those that might be itneresting fr you to use or that might get stats that give alchemy shards, or other orbs related to the sockets and links. |

I love this "old style" system, it reminds me on some childhood games.
Also it isn't that hard so manage your inventory, I remeber how could handle my inventory better than most of the "auto manage" buttons that were in some games. If you don't like it, ok but it is only one little downer. | |
" Sure they do, stack two-column/three-row weapons with helms/boots/gloves! Or better yet, two helms/boots/gloves with belts, jewelry and orbs :) |

" But as you find many of this realy big items (2h mace, bows, bodys) you will have to port back more often with a complet empty row. The "standart" items I just carry 1 stack town portals and 1 stack wisdom scrolls (together 2 slots) with me. If I now find 3 of this big items I allready have 4 unused slots if I don't find 4 different 1-slot items or 2 belts. With 6 invent rows I might be able to pick up two more 4-slot items (gloves, helmet, etc) which are more common then belts. |

I like the feeling of size this system gives you. So rings feel like rings. 2hs feel like 2hs.
What i didnt like about d3 is that my 2h polearm is the same size as my dagger. and my ring is half as large as my poleaxe.. Smoother than Smooth. Last edited by Moist#6523 on Jan 28, 2013, 4:15:43 PM

5 rows is an intentional limitation that makes 3-tall and 4-tall items that much more effectively bulky and one-square items like currency that much more portable. I feel like this is why we're not given the option to rotate items in the backpack.
