Life Leech on Damage Dealt or Damage Given?

Ok, so my question is this:

Let's say I'm attacking a monster with a total of 2000 life. If I kill it in one hit with a spell that deals 5000 damage, will I leech a percentage of 2000 or of 5000?
That is, is the damage I leech equivalent to the maximum life of the monster, or the actual damage the spell would have made, if not for the lower monster HP?
In the example, you dealt 5000 damage to the monster - you will leech a percentage of that damage dealt.
The monster only lost 2000 life as a result of taking the damage, because that's all it had, but it still took 5000 damage for anything that cares how much damage it took.
What if monster had 10000 life, and you dealt 5000 damage, monster lost 2500 life due to it's defensive mechanism.

My leech is 20%, how much have I leeched back?
Your tooltip damage was 5000,while you dealt 2500.I am pretty sure life leech applies after damage reduction comes into account. At least it is how leech works in most games.
I'm sure it's like that too, but I got confused on Mark's comment.
Leech is based on the damage taken by the enemy. If it mitigates lots of damage, it takes less, so you leach less.
Let's see, if I deal damage to a monster, it doesn't matter how much HP it has, only how much damage I actually deal? So damage mitigation, through whatever means, will diminish the amount of life leeched, but the fact the monster didn't even had 999999 HP for you to leech, doesn't matter?

Ok, I guess I can plan my builds with certainty now!
Thank you all very much!

Yes, you can note this when hitting enemies affected by immortal aura, you still do regular damage to them and can leech, it just doesn't get removed from their health.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

The first chunk of Damage is removed from their Life pool just fine :P But yes, it's a good way to see this effect for yourself. I've always quite enjoyed that Allies Cannot Die works like that; they'd be a lot harder if Leech is largely uneffective.

Just beware that damage reflection works in the same way, so reflection is not limited by monster hp.
