alteration vs augmentation

both alteration and augmentation orbs say the same thing, they'll add a magical property or mod. whats the difference? is there a difference?

Im assuming that 1 changes the prefix, one changes the suffix, but which one is which? I dont wanna waste mine to test this out and all the sources i've check just repeats what the game says. can anyone please say what exactly these 2 items do?

Alteration makes a white item blue and adds 1-2 mods. Augmentation will add a mod to a blue item if it is missing a prefix or suffix.

I think you mean orb of transmutation makes it from white to blue. not alteration

Yes you are correct. Alteration will re-roll a blue item, Transmutation will turn a white to blue and Augmentation will add a prefix or suffix.

Alteration re-rolls the mods.

Augmentation will keep the mods and add one more.

so when you say add, that means it just adds it if there is room?

so if I have a blue item with 2 mods on it, but I dont like 1 of the mods, can I use the orb of augmentation on it to change just 1 of them? or do I have to use alteration to change both? and then hope I get the 2 I want or at least 1 I want, and then augmentation it and pray I get the second mod I want?

You will use alteration orbs and hope you get the 2 mods you are looking for. I only use Alterations on Flasks. You will use them on gear in early game on your first run thru or end game trying to craft.

They are also can be used to buy items form the vendors.

Edit- yes Augmentation will only work if there is an open spot.

No. Augmentation will re-roll all mods except the implicit mod.
