It's a bit exceptional for a massively multiplayer game - but unfortunately it's true. Disabling the chat entirely and zones will load faster, strongboxes will cause less screen freezes (even those guarded by exiles), the overall performance will get better.
This performance boost is more notable on lower-end systems than on higher ones, I guess.
