Same skill gems?

If I get another skill gem of one that I already have, is there any benefit to using both? I had fireball but then got another fireball and was wondering how they had the variants that I saw in some videos a while back.
gems are a drop, so it can happen that you get more than one of one gem.

You could add it to your inventory and use it for trading. every gem that you equip will level while you play, no matter if you use it or not
Wand's don't kill people, i kill people, with Wand's
If you want to, you can use 2 different of the same spells. I usually wouldn't recommend this unless you know exactly what build you are trying to go for. An example could be, someone with 2 fireballs using 1 with Increased Fire Damage, Faster Casting for a single target, and their other fireball might be Lesser Multiple Projectiles and Chain for an AoE. If you're not planning on doing something like this, you can either vendor it (not recommended), or save it in your stash for later use or a trade. Generally fireball isn't worth anything, because it's such a common gem. An exception would be if the gem had quality, then you should save it.

There are sale recipes with gems as well arent there?
As for the variants you mentioned- you need support gems for the skill to be augmented. For example-

You have fireball and get a "chain" support gem. You equip both gems on a linked piece of equipment, and viola! chain fireballs.

Skill gem recipes are for resistance rings. They require a skill gem and an iron ring. Blue gems for cold resist, red for fire, and green for lightning.
All the things I want to remember are in the places I'd like to forget.

Thanks so much for the replies! You guys answered all my questions! :D
I've noticed some older threads that specified cumulative support for same skills.

We have this setup:

Fireball lvl2 + LesserMultipleProjectiles in Gloves
Fireball lvl3 + Fork in Wand

I've seen two explanations:

1. You have a single fireball spell selectable in the usable spell menu (QWERT) and this fireball will be lvl 3 and have LMP and Fork at the same time.

This variant means that instead of finding 3 linked slots to have Fireball+Fork+LMP, we can cheat arround that with two items with two linked slots and two fireballs.

Also this creates weird stuff like : how the LMP + Fork decreased damage is calculated? Do they add up like they were linked to a single fireball?

2. You have two separate fireballs selectable in the spell menu, and one has fork and one has LMP.

Which one is it in the current version?

I'm asking because I am interested in building a Witch using 5 Lighting Warps at the same time as the main weapon, and I would definitively like variant 2 to be correct :D

Was thinking of getting two heartbreakers and putting a dual strike gem in each and getting 2 iir and 2iiq. Probably won't work but you are swinging both weapons at the same time right and the are both supported by same skill and both culling. Hope there is a glitch. I've searched all day to find a similar discussion and this one is the closest I got
