Estimated Physical Damage Reduction
It is my understanding that the percentage you have is the percent that damage is reduced per each hit, not counting chaos damage of course. Am I right?
I used to play Diablo 3, then I realized it doesn't have a Shabby Jerkin.

"No. First, it's estimated physical damage reduction, so in addition to chaos, it also won't apply to fire, cold or lightning damage, only to physical. Second, it's estimated physical damage reduction - it's a rough guess. The amount that armour protects you is different depending on how strong the hit is - the same amount of armour will prevent a higher percentage of damage from a small hit than from a big one. The percentage shown as an estimate is based on the average amount of damage we expect a monster of your level to be dealing, but individual monsters will deal more or less damage, thus causing lower or higher amounts of reduction.
okay so i understand just the physical part, that's easy. Now the reason you take more damage from a bit hit is just because the percentage of a big hit is small than the percentage of a smaller hit? Or is it a little bit more complicated than just that straight forwardness?

" Sad to say it's more complicated than that. As Mark said "the same amount of armour will prevent a higher percentage of damage from a small hit than from a big one". Explanation from the mechanics thread in the spoiler:

Armour / Damage Reduction
Damage Reduction reduces physical damage taken. Elemental damage and damage-over-time are not affected. The amount of damage reduction depends on the defender's armour total, and the attacker's attack damage: reduction = armour / (armour + 12*damage) The amount of reduction is capped, it cannot be more than 90%. The fact that damage reduction scales with the amount of damage means it is difficult to know exactly how much damage is being reduced. An easy to remember rule of thumb is that to achieve 50% damage reduction, you will need an armour rating equal to twelve times that of the damage being dealt. For example, to achieve 50% damage reduction against a 100 damage hit, you'll need 1200 armour. |

okay, i think i understand. For the most part I guess. So even with a decent percentage of estimated reduction, I still should avoid all big hits like the black plague if it is possible. Or something along those lines :)

" Exactly. Armor will help a lot in many situations, but you will still need to be careful (and have a lot of HP or ES) around the heavy hitters. |

" Yes. Bosses like Brutus and Vaal Oversoul can deal a ton of physical damage. Also any hits that are mostly elemental or chaos damage will ignore your armor so make sure you have high elemental resistances. Forum Sheriff

I was just wondering, does this reduction deduct the amount of damage you do; or the amount of damage you take?

" Holy necro........................ It reduces the amount of damage you take.
So this means for a hit that does 10K Damage, there is no chance of surviving it? Even with 10K Armour and 10K life?
