Stuck at Authenticating User / Contacting Server

Was playing earlier today, just sitting in town and dropped back to login screen with the usual 'an unexpected disconnection occured' message

Now when I try to log in the 'Contacting Server' message appears on screen, the bottom left shows 'connecting to login server...', 'connected to login server.', 'authenticating user...' but that is where it stops, I never get the 'authenticated.' message or go to the character selection screen, it just sits there indefinitely until I click on exit and restart the client.

Can log in using an alt account with no issue so it must be only this account which is dissapointing as this is my main.

Have tried the usual pack check / defrag etc. to no avail.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Rob

Are you using the Steam client, or the normal classic client?
I have the same problem, using the normal classic client

However, the problem only started today, ever since the Singapore server disappeared. This plus the fact that I'm playing from Singapore & Vietnam makes me really frustrated, since there's no more reasonable ping server for SEA.

And here's come the good part, after I changed my IP to a Korean one via VPN, I could connect to the server again ( I tried Australia )

Apparently all SEA IPs are being blocked out ?
Sorry for the late reply, been away for the weekend. Just tried again and still can't login, stuck at authenticating user for only this account, trying an alt account works fine.

Regular classic client, never used Steam for any games.

Not a problem with the Singapore server, been using the Australian gateway since before it was added to the official server list and this is the first time I've had this problem.

Any ideas?
I'm not sure this is related, but this morning when I was opening POE, it popped for update, and then when i got into the game, tried login, I could see my characters, but all the leagues just dissappeared.

I tried hit play and it said "Contacting Server" for a while, then an "Unexpected disconnection.." error popped up. Relogin again and all my characters were gone from the characters list. Restarting the game and problem persisted.

Lucky enough for me, i always had a backup of my game folder before doing the update...

I took a look at the log file (under <game-folder>/logs/Client.txt, and noticed some error log while update (something like "Timed out waiting for blah blah blah...")

I had to do OpenVPN in order to get pass the update process. Now I can login fine... but the server lags as hell. I'm playing on America btw.

Hope it helps for your case. I'm from Vietnam fyi

If the patch server is timing out like this, and you need a VPN to access it, even when there is no patch to update to, you can also use the --nopatch option to bypass the patching process.

Instead of "-swa" put "--nopatch":

normal Client.exe shortcut:

for Steam:
Ok so it turns out that I can log into this account using OpenVPN, however playing with ping jumping between 700-1200ms is not good at all.

What I can't understand is why I only need to use a vpn for this account when I have never had to before and other alt accounts can log in fine without using the vpn.

Anyone?
I honestly have no clue. Now I can't login without a VPN anymore where just a day ago login was with ease.

Ever since I updated this patch I've noticed this issue
Ok so I gave my ISP a call and asked if they were caching any data, they said that they were not but they reset my connection at their end and that seems to have solved the problem.

Now back online with ~60ms ping :)
