Hellgate Global (Hellgate: London Resurrection)

I recently found out about this re-release of a game that had incredible potential with a horrible business plan and not enough funding for full development. The result was nearly a complete flop, and the servers went down except for one small country.

However, the people who now have the copyrights are actually doing some development and changing/balancing the game, as well as allowing global access again! (I don't know if it is truly global or if some areas still can't get on)

While it may still have bugs and the systems need some adjustment, I think it's still in open beta more or less, so there are other changes to come including more content. As it is, I have been having a bit of fun with my Guardian.

I suppose I should point out a few things that are interesting about it:
** Diablo-esque loot system, with the ability to add properties to an item a few times for a fee as well as upgrade the base stats with materials you get by breaking down unused items.
** Account security code, which is a 4-digit PIN number that if set up, must be entered each time you log into a character before you can really do anything with your inventory, so even if your account were compromised it would still be difficult to steal everything.
** FPS type interface - mouselook and WASD keys, hold Alt to free mouse pointer to click on various interface buttons as needed.
** Access to the third Act is purchased via microtransactions for under USD$5, or can be bought from another player with ingame currency if you save up for a bit, which isn't all that tough to do in Act 2.
** Marketplace - basically an auction house for selling old gear/items or finding new ones.
** Instanced dungeon/quest areas - Stations (towns) have waypoints and can hold multiple players but each party gets their own instance when leaving the station, which can be reset from the station via a minimap button.
** Achievements, some of which when unlocked give an equippable ability that usually gives a small stat or other bonus, for example completing the tutorial will net you an achievement that lets you equip a 2% damage bonus. Another one for killing a particular named mob 30 times (go in, kill, leave, reset, repeat) to get +5 to Accuracy stat, etc etc.
** Potions heal several ticks of a certain amount over several seconds, and have a 10 second cooldown between uses.
** In addition to health and power, there are shields gained from some gear, which will take damage before your health. Armor does not affect damage to sheilds from what I can tell, so they go down relatively quick, but there are some skills and shield booster potions to help.
** "Messenger from Hell" Most areas have a bar/counter for kills, and when you kill that many mobs it will summon a named monster which will drop better loot and give a good exp chunk, but can be rough sometimes. Once the named is killed, the counter resets and you can fill it again.
** Monsters will respawn if you wander too far away from a spot then go back to it, even if you didn't reset the instance.
** They currently have Normal and Nightmare difficulty, with a major difference over the Diablo II difficulties: rather than restarting from Act 1 in a new difficulty, you can change it at any time in a station and it merely increases the difficulty and rewards of everything you fight! I'm not sure if I like this or not yet, because I am only level 15 atm.

Well, I am sure plenty of replies will refer to the complete failure of the first version, or how this version isn't as good. But all I really can say is that at least they are trying to fix it, and if they are able to do so it may be pretty fun! For now, keep an eye on it or just go try it out yourself so you have a solid argument for or against it!
I didn't get to play the original online, so I was pretty excited to see it come around again, even though there were many many bad reviews from before.

EDIT: Adding URL for Hellgate Global.

ive tried to download it a few times
but it locks up about 1/2 way throu all well
Is it locking up during the download or the extraction/install process?

I had trouble with it locking up while extracting from the 2nd rar file, I thought it was just my screwy hard drive but maybe there's a bigger problem...
The way I got around it was to extract it manually then run the setup from the resulting folder. I'm willing to help troubleshoot if you need!
i played that game didt like it at all i tought was gone be better
The new guys are trying to make it better, though their English team could use some work :P I'm gonna keep an eye on it for a while, until I can get into PoE.
I tried it. It felt like a Monty Python AD&D session. I was lvl 2 and rares/uniques were dropping all over the place.

Kinda ruined the game for me when I had all yellow items at level 4. Half the thrill of games like this is finding the loot. When it's given away so freely, that part of the enjoyment is lost.
I too have found Hellgate Global (resurrection). I'm sorry to see that a lot of you are having trouble installing this great game. Those of you who are disappointed in the drop system as it stands, have to understand that they're trying to get people enthusiastic about playing. They have increased the drop rates, and are holding periodic Hellrush Events to encourage people to play, and invite others to join. It's a growing community, so you have to expect things like that.

The more I play, the more reasons I find not to play. There are still a lot of bugs that apparently existed as far back as Flagship. I don't understand how Hanbit can charge players just to advance in the regular game content without fixing game breaking bugs like freezing at waypoints, random crashing, rollbacks after a crash or D/C, not being able to view other members of your party on the battlefield without constantly going back to town and resynchronizing clients. I still stand by my original comment that the game is great, the fault lies in the hands of those who decided to revive a broken machine.

For anyone having download issues, try the torrent.

Sadly, I think HG:G's community is shrinking instead of growing. Hellgate has been one of my top three favorite games since it originally released, but Hanbit doesn't know what they're doing with it. They have a relatively small team of 20 people working on it. While they have managed to implement the newest content, there are so many things that could be done to improve the game.

I still love it, though.
Closed Beta/Alpha Tester back after a 10-year hiatus.
First in the credits!
Couple quick tips to save up the required ingame currency:

Don't buy any equipment (I got by only buying some teleports and ids as needed), with a melee char, so shouldn't be too hard.

If you are skilled, play through nightmare difficulty. you don't gain/lose anything from skipping normal, monsters are a bit tougher, but you get more rare/epic/boss monster spawns, that means more decent loot.

Don't ID items with < 50 base sell value (if in explorable, just dump/salvage all green.)

Use the AH to sell gold gear....even if you price it low, you're making more than merchant (most items start at 1/10th of actual value when you drag them into it).

Level up 2 chars...or more if you're short. Mail the gold in-game to one character from the others.

I got through to the 3rd chapter, but got burned out by that time, would be better if I had a buddy to run with.
Oh well, have all access if I decide to go back.
