Prefix and Suffix Gear

Hello everyone!

I am confused what these Orbs are used for.

I looked up what it was to be used for and PoE Wiki says: "An Orb of Augmentation is a currency item that can be used to enhance a piece of magic equipment with a new random affix. This can only be used on an item with one affix, since magic items can have at most one prefix and one suffix."

I don't understand what the "Prefix, Suffix and Affix" mean in terms of gear. I have a lot of these orbs and have not been able to get them to successfully apply to any gear that I have tried them on. It always says "failed to apply".

If someone could shed some light on this it would be great!

Affixes include Prefixes (labels that go at the front of the name) and Suffixes (labels that go at the end of the name).

Magical items may have 1 or 2 Affixes. If they have 2 Affixes, 1 will be a Prefix and 1 will be a Suffix.

As an example, a magical item may be called "Thirsty Sword of Rage".
The item is a sword and it has two affixes. "Thirsty" is the prefix and "of Rage" is the suffix. Because it has two affixes, you could not use an Orb of Augmentation on this item.

If however it was called "Thirsty Sword" (with no suffix) or "Sword of Rage" (with no prefix), then you could use an Orb of Augmentation on it.

Affixes are the properties an item can have. Prefixes have their name before the items (Humming) base name, and suffixes afterwards (of Slamming). Magic items don't necessarily have both a pre- and suffix, and the orb of augmentation will give a magic item with only one affix a second one.
