Lightning Resistance and shock!

How is shock calculated? Does the lightning resistance reduce the shock chance? If I were to use
(as I currently do), all physical damage has a chance to shock me. But if I have 90% lightning resistance, how can I calculate the chance of being shocked?

Well the shock duration is based on the amount of HP taken away in the hit. So yes Lightning Resistance does influence the chance to be shocked/the shock duration since it reduces the damage taken and thus the hp taken away.
have a look at the wiki: http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Shock

you can get shocked by various happenings, but crits are the most common. shock duration is both dependant from the ammount of lightningdmg you take and life you have.

The shock duration is one thing, but what about the shock chance?

As of now, I'm using
to bu safe. But it's rather bad, so I wonder if I'm better off using a high armor helmet.

There is no such thing as "shock chance" shock can always occur if a critical strike with lightning damage is dealt.
The whole question is if the hp taken away in this critical hit is enough to trigger shock but every hit that meets these conditions will trigger it.
Shock might only have a barely noticeable lenght with enough damage mitigation but it will still always occur.
