Whats the point of chaos damage gems?

First of all chaos damage's bonus of ignoring energy shield might as well not exist for the gems.
Even if you put an added chaos damage on your main skill the chaos damage will ignore the ES and the rest of your damage wont, you still will need to break the ES in order to kill the monsters.

Chaos damage may be espcially effective against players but not monsters. Its not like there arn't plenty of monsters resistant to it.

Theres no stats in the game that scale chaos damage other than attack speed and crit. Crit is terrible for chaos damage because it gets no bonus and attack speed is very hard to acquire.
All chaos damage damage gems eventually become worthless because they can't scale.

Since chaos has zero use end game you'd think it would at least make up for by being good for leveling. But than you have builds like elemental cleave which level FASTER than chaos builds
and are still usable end game.

The only effective way to do chaos damage is with that 1 unique bow that costs like 10 exalts and even that is more a lightning damage build than a chaos build.

I don't remember any point in the game from closed beta to today where the chaos gems have ever been good choices for end game.
yes its kind of bad.

well to early to say its useless, maybe they add items who actually does "ignore the resistance and energy shield when using chaos damage" or something similiar :)
good for skills like incinerate because the flat damage is higher compared to added cold/lightning

plus incinerate cant crit, bit of a niche gem, or use it to wear a boss down over time, or then theres voltaix rift bow "chaos damage can shock"
I haven't seen any stats on how high monsters' Chaos Resistance can reach, but I know from experience that it can't be much. Viper Strike seems to work just about as quickly on Chaos resistant Statues in Merciless Act 3 Imperial Gardens as on the Porcupines and Retched Avians. In practice, it's nothing to worry about.

As for the Chaos Damage gem, it does higher damage at comparable levels than elemental support gems. For leveling, that's useful, and with Chaos damage there's no concern with provoking either elemental or physical reflect damage. So if you want a stand-alone damage boost that neither has nor needs further damage enhancement, Chaos is a consistent and reliable choice.

chaos damage doesnt scale.

if you put on added lightning there are many ways to boost weapon elemental damage
you can also just scale the weapons main damage with added fire, faster attacks, multi-strike, fork, gmp, melee splash. there are much better options than added chaos

as for spells. concentrated effect, gmp, fork, penetration, faster casting, etc.

i could see using added chaos damage if you are a new player who doesnt have access to the core support gems but there are better options for nearly any ability

chaos damage doesnt scale.

So? Not everything has to work the same way. The gem can be good when you have only one slot left that happens to be blue, and no good way to use any other type of damage.

A nice thing about chaos damage is that it doesn't get reflected.

Edit: oops missed that this was mentioned earlier.

It also doesn't trigger elemental equilibrium.
When I kill a man he stays dead.

afaik the only added dmg gem that increases the added dmg with quality?
Forums are SOOO much fun on patch day!

Casuals play because it's fun, not to achieve any goal unreachable with their resources.
We are playing for the next difficulty, the next keystone, the next item upgrade.
Not to feel better than anyone else.

If you deal chaos damage with a spell, it scales with spell damage. If you deal chaos damage with an area damage skill, it scales with area damage. If you deal chaos damage with a projectile, it scales with projectile damage. Damage converted into chaos scales with increases to the original damage type, and so on.

It's harder to scale it for sure, but it definitely scales.
