"Mephitis" offensive aura attack (please check this idea)

Okay so, you know inferno from diablo 2, you stop and "throw" flames in a line, dealing continuous damage. The PoE equivalent is "incinerate" I think

This skill would be similar yet quite different

instead of throwing a stream in a line, you would create an "aura" that deals continuous damage around you

the damage would be based on your weapon, so your default attack dps in other words

I know it sounds really overpowered but the downside of this skill is that it is not very versatile because the damage is continuous in a area around you.

In other words all the following effects would not work with it because it doesn't have "individual hits":

Spoiler
stunning, igniting, freezing, shocking
life gain on hit, life/mana leech
knockback
bleed, blind, poison


being area damage, it would automatically pierce and because it is continuous damage, it would not miss, making it the only spell to cast based off your weapon

Visually it would look like this for example:

You are using a two-handed sword, the character slams the sword in the ground while kneeling, it would kinda look like this:

mana would be drained as the skill remains active

i think you are talking about holy fire/freeze/lighing paladin offensive auras.

dmg should be a fixed amount of spell dmg that can then be enhaced with +spell dmg items/nodes, this kind of auras would need a serious drawback like -50% dmg to other spells/attacks while active.

It would not be like what you guys mentioned because you can't move while you are activating it and it's based off your weapon.

think of "sweep" but continuous damage instead of individual attacks, plus I would really want it to have no damage penalty like "reave"

again, it sounds miles better than "sweep" because it would not have any damage penalty but because it deals continuous damage, you would not be able to have any "on hit effects" which deteriorates the value of the skill a lot but also, because it's (visually speaking) an aura coming from you, you could use any weapon with it.
