Is there some kind of thing I need to do to get on the list or is it just I might get one might not?

Just be patient and check the timer on the main page. It's completely random, but having at least 1 post on the forum improves your chances.

Don't think so. Yesterday someone got his key who subscribed and posted in January and never logged in again since then.
