Cold damage, chilling, freezing, and defense questions

In the "Mechanics" Thread, you can read that cold damage has a "chance" of chilling the enemy, and crits with cold have a "chance" of freezing the enemy.

1. What is this "chance"?
Is it based off cold damage vs. max health, so that bigger hits = more chance of chilling / freezing?

2. Does cold resistance help reduce this "chance"?
Or having a lot of health (see question 1 above)?

(I'm also curious if the same applies to the analog of burning / schocking.)

Thank you

I don't think it's a chance mechanic. If you deal cold damage, and the amount is sufficient vs target max life, they get chilled. If the attack was critical and did sufficient cold damage vs target max life, they are frozen. The duration of the status is dependant on the damage done.

There may be a "chance" factor since your cold damage does range from X-Y when fired. But if you have 1 cold damage on your weapon, past level 10 or so, there's zero chance of chilling an enemy. It can't be chance based, because there should always be a chance no matter how small, for the chill effect. Chill must be based on max life.

Thank you. I was quoting the Mechanics thread with "chance". Is the formula for determining chill or freeze clear?
Does cold resistance help in any way?

Thank you.

Cold resistance reduces the damage you take, so if you take less damage, it's less likely you'll be frozen and chilled. There's a threshold of damage requires vs your maximum life to inflict a status effect. There's no real "chance" involved unless the skill that's used says it has a chance to freeze (like cold snap).

The forumla is something like, if a cold spell crits and does something like 3-4% of your maxmimu life in damage, it freezes you. The duration increases the higher the damage done.

The mechanics thread may be a little off. Last I read it, they talked about chests being effected by IIR/IIQ, which is completely wrong according to the devs. I ran the unique map with 200% added rarity and they said I wasted my time doing that, because rarity does not effect chests. I dunno if the mechanics thread still asserts that it does.

Is it possible to freeze/chill someone using a fire spell that has added cold damage via your gear? Or does the cold damage itself need to be 3-4% of the max hp?
