When do I freeze enemies?
|
If I use an "add cold" gem to lets say "Dual Strike", when will I freeze enemies?
EDITED Thx Edit: referred to the mechanics thread with every crit strike I do with Dual-Strike + Add Cold-Gem I will freeze an enemy. I hope this is right. Would be nice if one could confirm it. Last edited by WUlf1337#0866 on Aug 20, 2012, 8:00:02 AM

Under normal circumstances, you must cause a critical strike to freeze. However, the cold damage must be a large enough portion of the target's maximum life to cause a 350ms freeze, or no freeze will occur at all. The amount of cold damage vs target max life determines the freeze duration.
In addition, there are several conditions that can causes freezing without a crit. You can use a quality Added Cold Damage support, the curse Elemental Weakness, or get the "Freeze" passive node near Shadow's start location to increase your chances of freezing without critting. Note that this still follows the 350ms rule, without the added benefit of the extra damage from a crit. Urist McDwarfy has been happy lately. He admired an exceptional ARPG recently. Thank you for the answer. So somehow it seems, that it is not that easy to freeze a larger amount of enemies by melee attacks.

" Some active skills can have a additional chance to freeze enemys (without a critica hit) - e.g. glacial hammer EDIT: nvm i don't know how but i missed UristMcDwarfys reply XD Proud 5th duelist in the Jul 1 2012 Ladder Race and in the Nov 3 2012 Solo Turbo Race :D And even prouder 4th Templar in the Nov 10 Four-hour Party Hardcore Race :P Current OB success: top 20 Ranger in 105 Minute Turbo Solo (S4E9) Last edited by Sony_Black#0112 on Aug 20, 2012, 5:54:49 PM

In addition, you will always shatter corpses if the killing blow was a critical hit -- regardless of the amount of cold damage done.

"This is not true. A corpse will only shatter if it was frozen at the time of death, and if you don't cause enough cold damage to freeze for at least 300ms, then no freeze is applied and no shatter will occur. It is however, easier to shatter by killing with the crit, since you don't need the freeze to last any longer than the minimum 300ms, whereas to freeze on one hit and then ill on the other, they must stay frozen until the next attack hits. | |

Doh, it is 300ms. I was thinking about normal stun duration, which is 350ms.
FYI, it's not impossible to get enough cold damage on an AoE attack to make it possible to freeze, especially since crit multiplier multiplies every component of the damage (including cold damage). Another option is Elemental Proliferation on a single target attack that does lots of cold damage. It won't damage other enemies in an AoE, but it could freeze them so that you can AoE at your leisure. I actually had a build that ended up doing quite a bit of both freezing and stacking shocked with elemental damage on a cleave attack. There have been way too many changes to make that particular build viable, but I'm sure there's some way to do it... Urist McDwarfy has been happy lately. He admired an exceptional ARPG recently. " And how do I know that I do enough cold damage? Do I have to deal a specific %life of damage on the enemie with my critical hit, or how is it handled? And again: This damage is not about normal damage (which only has to be a critical hit) but about the cold damage? Last edited by WUlf1337#0866 on Aug 21, 2012, 6:00:44 AM

" Yes. Due to damage range variance and variance in mob HP, there's really no way to tell until you go up and hit them in the face though :) |
