Does a cold critical strike always freeze?

http://en.pathofexilewiki.com/wiki/Freeze says:
"
Freeze is typically inflicted by Critical Strikes of Cold Damage.

And then there is a formula:
"
Let N be the Cold Damage dealt and L be the target's maximum Life. The Freeze duration D in milliseconds is then given by:
If N > L ÷ 3, then N = L ÷ 3
D = N ÷ ( L ÷ 100 ) × 100ms
If the duration would be less than 300 milliseconds, the Freeze effect is not applied. The maximum, unmodified Freeze duration from Cold Damage is 3.333 seconds.

Could it be that freeze is only applied at a critical strike, because the cold damage gets high enough due to the crit multiplier?
Or does crit have a chance to freeze the enemy independently from the crit multiplier?

Depends on the nodes you take and the skill itself and whether ou have frostbite curse up

The crit has to do enough damage to freeze by itself. BUT other factors can play into the freeze

The short answer is no

actually the short answer to the topic is "yes"
the long answers is: yes, but only if it does enough dmg to warrant a freez of it's minimum duration

normal hits can only freeze if you have a chance to freeze from somewhere, for example the Shadow starting point.
Doing 1 million cold dmg per hit won't freeze ever if it's not a crit and you didn't proc the freeze chance
Crits don't freeze BECAUSE they do tons of damage...they still need to to enough damage, but it's not the massive damage that causes the freeze. You could do 10k cold damage in one hit, but if it's not a crit and you have no "chance to freeze", it'll just be an extremely long chill.
Cold crits always freeze, except when the damage-duration is less than 300 millisecs, then not.
But you can sill freeze even if ou don't crit if you ha e frostbite curse up or certain nodes ...

This thread is a little confusing.

The answer to the thread title is no, because even with a crit you still need to do enough damage to get to 300ms.

"Could it be that freeze is only applied at a critical strike, because the cold damage gets high enough due to the crit multiplier?
Or does crit have a chance to freeze the enemy independently from the crit multiplier?"

Any elemental status ailment gets triggered by crits and then it will be determined if you do enough damage to actually freeze your opponent.

I really don´t know how to explain this easily, maybe someone else or this thread might help.
