Redeeming game code

I was given a code to redeem for a copy of the game. I put the code in on Steam and downloaded the game but now its telling me your account doesn't have access to the early game access go purchase access now? Was I supposed to redeem the code on Steam? If not why would Steam even accept the code to begin with

Hey there! The Steam and Epic Client Keys should unlock the Path of Exile 2 Client in your Steam or Epic Library, these do not provide Early Access.
