ED or Lich should create power charges, and Unearth consumes one to create minions

I love the unearth, contagion, and the essence drain witch. I play it every league. The issue is that on most boss fights, unearth can't really be used to create your minions. It kind of sucks because it forces you to play pure chaos build at end game for bossing, even if you want to utilize weapon swaps for minions.

I think that Essence Drain or one of the Lich's passives (Eldrich Empowerment) should generate a power charge either from just the ED doing damage or on EE sacrificing your energy shield. When you cast unearth, it will now consume all your power charges to summon the unearth minions. I am thinking 3 minions per 1 power charge.

You mean using unearth minions in bossfight? For what exactly? They last for about millisecond while deal close to zero damage.

To keep contagion constantly up. Also I don't know if it works but I put poison on unearth so the chaos totem does more damage.

So you rather set up your charges and then cast Unearth to create minions rather than simply cast Contagion?

Also how minions from Unearth keep Contagion up? If I'm not mistaken then they must be created from corpses which died while having Contagion to spread Contagion themselves. Or you want to creat contagious minions by hitting enemy with Contagion while having charges?

Oh I think you might be right. The issue for me, is I have a hard time landing contagion on the boss if I am not close. I'd rather cast it once and then cast unearth to keep minions and contagion up. I'd like to see then, a change where contagion with support gems perhaps also kills your minions and then explode for a bunch of damage that would be cool. I know there is a fire based one already but it be cool for chaos as well.

Ok. So I don't know if it's possible but if yes then supporting Unearth with Brutus Brain should create immortal minions which deal no damaga but are able to spread Contagion right? That's actually the only scenarion in which I see your proposal actually working.

Also it will be nice if Chaos Covenant convert damage from Minion Instability to chaos.

Last league I've used Unearth in my ED/C Lich build with "Brutus' Brain" (=deal not damage, but take no damage) to simply use those minions as long-lasting contagion spreaders. For bosses they weren't of much use anyway, so I used chaos bolt for extra damage if ED/C + Wither + Dark Effigies + Despair wouldn't quite cut it...
