Question About Damaging Ailment Duration

So the nodes Fast Acting Toxins (deal damage 12% faster) and Lasting Toxins (increased skill duration and poison duration) seem to conflict with eachother, yet I still see a lot of builds utilizing both. Allocating either of these passives directly effect the poison duration in the tooltip. All of the information on this is from years ago so I’m trying to figure out which stat to stack here. I understand longer duration is good for stacking and shorter for mapping but why use both?

For context I’m running a poison pathfinder and not sure which route to take. The new highway to fast acting toxins from the ranger starting point seems tempting - 12 points all ailment related - but some are longer duration and some are deals damage faster (which do have different terminology so I’m thinking that they can in fact be working in tandem. There’s a whole separate passive specifically called “less skill duration” as opposed to “deals damage faster”).

Any help on clearing this up would be huge!

"Faster" doesnt affect total damage of poison, it just deal that damage faster.
If poison deals 100 dmg/s for 4 seconds, 50% faster means you deal that 400 damage in 2 seconds (or 3 seconds, not sure) - things die faster as it effectively increase DPS of poison.

"Duration" increase duration of poison and its overal damage.
If poison deals 100 dmg/s for 4 seconds, 50% increased duration means you do 100 dmg/s for 6 second - same DPS but for longer time

So "duration" increase overal damage of poison, "faster" helps dealing that damage in shorter time.

"Skill effect duration" only affect poison effect from skill, not "generic" poison from hit.

Yes I understand the concept of that. The question is - isn’t it counterproductive to be getting the nodes that provide faster damage AND longer duration?

By your example if I got the faster dmg and dealt 400 dmg in 2 seconds and then got 100% duration id be doing 400 dmg in 4 seconds now?

Duration dont change DPS of poison, you will deal same DPS over longer time resulting in more damage total. 400 dmg in 2 second is 200 DPS, increasing duration by 100% will do 200DPS over 4 seconds, so 800 dmg total. Duration basicaly add "extra ticks" to poison.
Ok really appreciate the reply.

So please answer me like I’m 10 years old - would getting nodes like “deals damage 12% faster” and “poision duration 20% increased” conflict or benefit eachother?

THANK YOU FELLOW EXILE
Neither. It affect poison in different ways, theres no conflic nor benefit between them.
Ok great that makes sense! Appreciate you so much.

Bonus question since you’re very helpful: if I have a curse set to weapon set 2 and I allocate something like “20% increased duration of ailments against cursed enemies” with weapon set 2 passives and then I poison them using my weapon set 1 bow, will that passive apply? I’m under the impression that weapon set 2 passives are not active while the weapon from set 1 is active.

Thank you again!
It will not work as it doesn't directly interact with your curse skills.
